Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food SlicerCustomer Review: Better than a stationary mandoline for small jobs Summary: 5 Stars
This thing is great! I've tried several mandolines--from the top-of-the-line unit to an inexpensive, but highly rated V-slicer, and another handheld. I sent the former back, gave the V-slicer away and the handheld broke. None of them served my purpose. All the blade changing and/or adjusting with the stationary mandolines was awkward and a lot of trouble considering I wasn't cooking for a restaurant--I just wanted to make salads for one or two, or a variety of other things, but usually in rather small quantities. This slicer is perfect. Now I can slice a leek, a carrot and part of a cucumber directly onto my salad in seconds. I can slice beets or other veggies very quickly and conveniently directly into the pot. The large knob on the bottom of this unit turns easily to create the desired slice thickness and a quick swish and rinse leaves it clean for the next time. I get high-end mandoline quality slices from the super sharp blade, but without all the set up and clean up time. This unit is sturdy and reliable. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Between this and my Alligator dicer, my fruit and vegetable ingredients look professionally prepared and are done in a flash.
Update 9/5/09
This useful tool has been great for helping process summer bounty, most especially with getting the kernels off corncobs so they can be frozen. I've tried other products for that, but they are not satisfactory, where this tool allows me to run the cob down against the blade and in a few passes, all the kernels are in the bowl. I can do several ears in only a few minutes. I use one of those 'Kevlar' gloves to make sure I don't cut myself and it works great. Microplane 34007 Cut Resistant Glove
Customer Review: Good product for small quantities Summary: 3 Stars
I do a lot of cooking and food prep at home and I absolutely love Microplane products. The Microplane graters (Gourmet series are best, and best buys) get a lot of use and hold up well, and performance can't be beat.
I say this slicer and it piqued my interest so I looked for it in a kitchen supply store.
It is well designed and with the slider accessory (not expensive at all) it would do well for most home cooks, or for a busy cook who needs to slice a small amount: one carrot, half a cucumber or zucchini, etc. And it is adjustable, which is a plus.
But I judged that it would not do well for a large quantity because of it's small size and the two edges for cutting (not as easy as a single, slanted blade), so I didn't get it. But it is worth recommending it for the casual user because it is solid, useful, and would really help when thin, uniform slices are needed.
But I'll stick to my solid mandoline with attachments. It can handle a potato, fennel bulb, eggplant, parsnips, stirfry meat, etc. This little gadget would not be able to do that. And an adjustible mandoline can make julienne cuts, waffle slices, etc.
So my recommendation: buy this Microplane adjustible slicer if you do small jobs. For a big jog you'll need a good, solid steel adjustible mandoline slicer. The latter will cost about $100, but they last forever and are also very versatile.
Customer Review: Excellent product. Lots of bang for the buck. Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned much cheaper food slicers (aka Mandolins) and they were always disappointing. I decided to splurge. I found that a well-respected magazine rated this slicer as the best home slicer. So I dropped the change and bought it. I fell in love with it from the first use and to this day, am still in love with it. It slices onions wafer thin that I use fresh on salads or burgers, or that I can saute for steaks, or that I reduce and caramelize. It slices fresh produce effortlessly. Slicing squash on the bias and then quickly sauteeing in butter and pepper is a reality now. I can now slice sweet potatoes thin enough for frying up home-made sweet potato chips. Does this sound like a commercial for this product? It ought to be. This is one fantastic product. It cleans up super easy - just rinse under hot water. The guard is the only awkward part of the product, takes a bit getting used to. Of course, you must use it because the blade is outrageously sharp. This is one great product and now, one that my kitchen cannot be without.
Customer Review: Don't think, just buy Summary: 5 Stars
Stop wasting your time comparing mandolines. Seriously, have you heard of opportunity cost? :) I've already wasted enough of my time for you. The thing that makes this one stand out is it's small footprint, portability, and great design. It's not a kitchen utensil that feels like a hassle to use -- it's just like pulling out the vegetable peeler. I love that you can sit it on top of bowls to cut veggies right into the dish you're making. It's grippy, so it doesn't slide around. I absolutely hate hand washing, but this is SO easy to clean that I wash it and stick it back in the cabinet before dinner's even ready. It's very sharp, too (in fact, my husband suggested kevlar gloves...just in case).
Customer Review: BEST EVER Summary: 5 Stars
I HAVE HAD VARIOUS SLICERS OVER THE YEARS AND MOST
END UP IN THE DRAWER BECAUSE THEY ARE A PAIN TO USE. THIS UNIT IS TOP SHELF. FIRST OF ALL, IT IS VERY HIGH QUALITY, NOTHING LIKE THE ONES YOU BUY ON THE INFOMERTIALS OR AT FAIRS. THE FEEL IS SOLID AND THE ADJUSTABLE FEATURE PUTS IT IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CLASS. IT IS VERY SECURE WHEN IN USE AND COMFORTABLE TO HANDLE. JUST ONE PIECE, NOT A WHOLE BUNCH OF ADD ON'S. THE HOLDER IS WELL MADE AND COMFORTABLE TO HOLD. YOU CAN SLICE EGGPLANT IN NO TIME, AT WHATEVER THICKNESS YOU WANT AND THEN THROW THE THING IN THE DISHWASHER. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. ONE ADDED BENEFIT....IT IS MADE IN THE UNITED STATES.
