Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Metrokane Rabbit Wine Opener Tool Kit, SilverCustomer Review: A veritable feat of engineering! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Metrokane Rabbit as a Christmas gift for my parents and it has since become the most indispensible item in our kitchen. We drink wine every night in our house, and have been through many a corkscrew, but absolutely nothing compares to this. The Rabbit makes short work of opening a bottle of wine for even the puniest-armed of us, and indeed, has caused one or two scuffles at dinner over who gets to open the next bottle of wine! Three swift, smooth movements will open even the most stubborn bottle, and with none of the grunting, puffing and red-faced struggling that often accompanies this manouvre. There is a particular brand of white wine I drink that is next to impossible to open if you have left the bottle to chill with the cork in it, and I actually broke 3 "traditional" corkscrews trying to open one single bottle of this. Well, in the highest praise I can summon for the Rabbit, I have not had a problem with one of these bottles since I bought it. If you are a wine-drinker, or even just a lover of gadgets, buy this - now!
Customer Review: Don't be fooled Summary: 1 Stars
If you are looking for a well functioning opener, this is not it! Much better "rabbit" type openers are on the market. First is the fact that it is mostly plastic, not metal, so don't be fooled by the metallic appearance in the photo. When opening the first bottle, (with normal cork). I noticed it was much more difficult to use than the old one (other brand) I had. It required extensive pressure to insert the cork, to the point I thought the flimsy plastic handles would break. Then I opened a second bottle with a plastic cork. This almost broke the opener when using upward pressure to remove the cork from the bottle. And after finally getting the cork out of the bottle, (it took two people), the cork would not come off of the screw. I had to manually untwist the cork from the opener. Save your money, spend a little more and get a real opener. This one is nice to look at but not functional! Real Junk, and not cheap!!
Customer Review: This thing is my hero. Summary: 5 Stars
This was given to me as a Christmas gift last year and I can say without a doubt, that it has changed my life. No longer will I struggle with awkward handles on your more conventional corkscrew. No longer will I fear my waiters corkscrew is gonna rip into my hand and cause me to bleed all over my kitchen, guests, and cabernet. Once you learn how to use this ONCE, you will never again use a blunt object to gouge out a cork from a bottle of wine. This puppy never pushes a cork deeper into a bottle either. Added bonus: you can use the champagne stopper for other bottles, the foil cutter thing is handy (although I believe I have lost my already due to cats that live in my house that play with small objects). Truthfully, I don't use the wax remover thing because perhaps I don't drink enough fine wines that have the wax seal on them. Screw that! Actually, unscrew that. And use your Rabbit.
Customer Review: Worked fine for awhile Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this three years ago and it worked fine for about 5 or 6 months. Then it became more and more difficult to extract and release the corks. Finally, after even my husband struggled to work it, I replaced the worm. But that only helped for a few months until super-human strength was once again required. It works fairly well if the wine cork is not in tight but it's not good on tight corked bottles. A word of caution: When you are releasing the cork, make sure your finger is not between the trigger and the handle when the trigger comes down to meet the handle. It requires so much downward force that I have bruised my hand several times when the lever came down hard on my knuckle. I hope by now they have made some engineering improvements on this wine opener.
Customer Review: A great gift Summary: 5 Stars
The Rabbit wine opener works just as advertised, although it takes a little more muscle than I originally thought. And what a great conversation piece! The foil cutter makes opening a bottle that much easier. The drip guard, to my surprise, doesn't fall off the bottle into your glass when you pour out the last little bit, as long as you push it all the way down the neck as far as it can go. I haven't had occasion to use the wax remover. The only piece in this kit I don't really understand is the sealer, it hasn't fit on any bottle I've tried yet. But then, I haven't tried it on a bottle of champagne yet, so maybe it will fit for that. The kit comes in an attractive case that stands up, which makes it a great gift.
