Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Metrokane Rabbit Corkscrew, BlackCustomer Review: works great until it doesn't Summary: 2 Stars
This is a wonderful product initially. It's easy to use and the cork just slides out effortlessly. However, the screw that it uses soon wears out. This can happen in as little as 3 to 6 months or so depending on how much wine you drink. I assume that the teflon coating wears off or the tip dulls. In any event, it then becomes increasingly difficult to use until it starts pushing the cork in the bottle. They throw in one extra screw, but additional ones are outrageously priced--$10 on Amazon. Nice margin for the manufacturer. There were at one time Chinese knock-offs in the marketplace that had the same characteristics, but at least they were cheap, $10 or 15 if I remember correctly. This product costs a lot of money for its short lifespan.
Customer Review: Maybe I don't drink enough wine..... Summary: 5 Stars
After reading some of the other reviews for this product, I was surprised. I have had this corkscrew since last December (I gave it to my boyfriend as a gift), and it has never had any problems. I will admit that the screw became dull after almost a year of use, but that is why another screw is included in the set. I also found that you can buy the attachment for $5 at most stores if you bring in your rabbit.
For the $50 that you pay for it, it is a great investment. The only reason I can see other people saying it gets more difficult as time goes by is becasue they are opening 10 bottles of wine a day! (OK...exaggerating a bit!) But if you are an avid wine drinker of 2 to 3 bottles a week, this is absoltely PERFECT!
Customer Review: Cheap but expensive?! Summary: 3 Stars
I'm considering buying the Metrokane Rabbit, and like what I see so far... BUT.... though it is a lot cheaper than the comparable Screwpull model two-stroker (pull/eject), it could be just as expensive as the Screwpull in the long run. Reason: with the Screwpull, when the worm must be replaced (and if it's Teflon coated it will wear off and not work at all well), you can replace just the worm; if this happens with the Rabbit (as far as I know), you'd have to buy a whole new corkscrew. I haven't been able to find out if the Rabbit's worm is replacable -- if it were, that'd make the Rabbit a REAL deal! Blurbs say the Rabbit has a lifetime guarantee, but "worm wear" has been my nemesis over the years. -- Sonny Grotto
Customer Review: Good product, no problems encountered Summary: 5 Stars
I've tried every cork-removing device out there, except for ones that bolt to a countertop or a load-bearing wall. This one is far and away the best. It moves old corks better than my waiter's corkscrew because it tears up the cork less as it passes through and goes nearly to the bottom.I haven't encountered the problems cited in other reviews with getting the pulled cork off the contraption. I simply followed the manufacturer's instructions. With the screw fully extended (handle fully forward into the "insert" position), clamp the two clamping handles shut so that the cork is completely below them, and then work the action as if extracting a cork. Voila! Cork falls off the screw. Even a drunk can do it!
Customer Review: Excellent from a bartenders point of view Summary: 5 Stars
For more than 15 years I have been opening all types of wine with all types of corkscrews. Every corkscrew will have trouble on dry corks or the new "plastic" corks but I have found the rabbit to be the best. Even on the driest of corks the rabbit works wonderfully. With a traditional corkscrew, on dry corks the cork will bend and break leaving it almost impossible to remove the broken part. When I have to open 60 bottles of wine a night I would be lost without my rabbit. I highly recommend the Rabbit. Of course, if you do not feel it is worth the money you probably don't think a $30 bottle of wine is worth the money either. May I suggest you stick to the bag of wine until your tastes improve.
