Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Metrokane Rabbit Corkscrew, Black

Customer Review: Endlessly frustrating
Summary: 1 Stars

Got to back up others who have had problems with this product. If only I'd read them first. At least I only spent $20 on it. Some say 'worked fine for 25 bottles, then trouble,' or 'broke after xx many bottles opened.' Not me. It's never broken, and never consistently worked from the beginning. Sometimes it still does. MY particular issue is one many describe, though not all: the 'worm' goes in just fine, then the worm pulls out just fine, leaving cork in the bottle. I've never had one push the cork into the bottle, and when it DOES pull the cork out (maybe half the time, probably less..), I don't have trouble getting the cork off the device. And I have plenty of strength for the process. It's just -- more often than not, worm goes in, worm comes out, and cork is sitting there in the bottle, laughing at me, and the useless hole I just drilled through it. At that point I get out the old double handled job, which has never failed. I may just toss this one into the next 'stoop sale' or 'Goodwill' box. Having totally given up, but a product which worked less than half the time from the very first is definitely one that NO ONE should EVER buy!

Customer Review: Rabbit wears
Summary: 2 Stars

The Rabbit when new is great. After about 9 months the screw became difficult to remove, and after 1 month factory "repair" that involved replacing the screw (they now sell replacements), they returned the Rabbit with the advice to not use it on synthetic corks because it rubs off the teflon. OK, new news although 95% of the wine had real corks. Since then its operational ease for real cork removal (common problem) has been maintained by carefully cleaning the screw (may be wax or other gummy residue) every other month. This Rabbit is the older non metal/plastic teeth model, but those teeth have not been an issue. A new trick after about 1.5 years of use is that it starts to withdraw the cork after coming part way up (unscrewing), so that it does not fully remove the cork from the bottle. But you have a great handle to pull the cork out the rest of the way! After a call to their customer service (that states a return call will be made in 48hours) and a 3 day wait, this Rabbit may be retired for a manual model. Great while it worked, and maybe for [the price] it should be considered disposable...this Rabbit had a good run.

Customer Review: No staying power
Summary: 1 Stars

Had used a similar product for 10 years. The Metrokane looked identical. Worked fine for a month. Became increasingly difficult to use. Today, the screw almost unravelled - can't use it any more. This is good news. Now I can buy something that works without a lot of effort.

Incidentally, my Metrokane lasted 9 months. ...

Update: eventually bought the Screwpull from Amazon ($99) - just used it; what a treat! It's the same design as my pre-Metrokane corkscrew, but the worm is now good for 2,000 corks!

Another comment on the Metrokane: it pinched my fingers everytime I released the cork.

Second update: I am still delighted with my Screwpull & I think I know why it is easier to use. The "ears", which I grip with my left hand, are 5.25 inches (measured from the worm), versus 4.5 inches for the Rabbit. In my case, this is sufficient to prevent pinched fingers.

The lever is 7 inches versus 5.5 inches for the Rabbit. This makes a huge difference in the amount of effort needed to remove the cork & also to release it from the worm.

It's possible that my Rabbit was a lemon, but the Screwpull just feels right in my hands.

Customer Review: Metrokane Rabbit Corkscrew
Summary: 1 Stars

After four years of great service, my MASTER CLASS corkscrew started to fall apart, so I ordered a Metrokane Rabbit corkscrew as a replacement. When the package arrived, the plastic case had been damaged in shipment, but I decided to just put tape on it and not go through the hassle of returning it. The very first time I used the Rabbit corkscrew it failed to pull out the cork, (the corkscrew unscrewed out of the cork), so I got out my old Master Class to complete the job. I then went to Metrokane's website to check out the FAQ's. It said if the cork fails to come out you are not squeezing the handles tight enough. The next time I used the Rabbit I squeezed the handles as tight as possible and it failed on the first attempt,(the corkscrew unscrewed from the cork), but it pulled the cork out on the second attempt. I have now used the Rabbit on appx. 12-bottles of wine, and it takes a minimum of two to three attempts to finally get the cork out! I am 6-ft., 200-lbs, and squeezing the handles is not the problem! I think Metrokane needs to redesign this product.

Customer Review: Look out for wax-covered corks
Summary: 1 Stars

My first corkscrew failed within a month of its first use, when it started pushing corks in instead of pulling them out. I mailed it back to the company and they sent me a replacement that also failed with the same problem after less than a dozen uses.

When I sent the second unit back to the company, they returned an empty box with a handwritten note telling me to re-read the instructions and avoid using the corkscrew with wax-covered corks. They claimed that they didn't have to honor the warranty because I had used the corkscrew improperly. I checked the instructions and indeed, there was a vague reference in the fine print to scraping the wax off of corks, but they mentioned nothing in the instructions about voiding the warranty or damaging the corkscrew.

They say that they are going to send me a third corkscrew but I've pretty much had it with this company. If I had it to do over again I would pay a premium for a higher quality corkscrew that offered better customer service.
