I just finished reading these reviews when the wife returned home with this model. Figuring I'd give it a chance, I readied it for it's first outing. The flimsy construction was my first clue: it didn't seem to fit together well. Next came the leakage; I tightened the spout, base and handles. Next: off snapped the spout handle. With the help of a screwdriver as some scalding, just-brewed coffee poured down my hand, I was able to get it back on. The next night I fired it up again. 45 cups of hot, premium-ground coffee was in the pot. But not a drop wanted to come out of the spout. Why? Because the rubber washer in the spout melted shut, sealing in the coffee.I wondered: to whom do I owe this experience: the Melitta engineer, who should have specified a "heat-resistant" washer for construction. Or the assemblers in China, who didn't bother to tighten the screws. Or the store that sold this worthless junk.
If there were a museum for shoddy kitchen equipment, I'd glady donate this masterpiece.

Mirror-finish stainless steel housing dual power-on and coffee ready lights automatically switches to keep warm temperature glass percolator knob on lid phenolic side handles dripless spigot. 1000w/130wMade of stainless steel polished to a mirror finish, this 45-cup coffeemaker is ideal for a buffet line, office, or any other situation drawing lots of coffee drinkers. It percolates up to 45 five-ounce cups and then automatically switches to keep-warm, serving-temperature mode. (A coffee-ready light shines when brewing is complete.) The urn has a two-way, dripless spigot high enough for either mug or cup-and-saucer service. Pushed down, the spigot's lever dispenses coffee and then springs back up. Raised to the vertical position, the spigot dispenses continuously for filling serving carafes. The urn has a stay-cool base that won't harm a surface and stay-cool handles that make it simple and safe to move the urn from place to place. The urn's cover locks in place to prevent accidental spills. The percolator works inside--basket, pump tube, and spring--and the urn's cover and glass knob are dishwasher-safe. The urn measures 11-1/2 inches wide, 16-1/2 inches high, and 12-1/2 inches deep (including spigot). It carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
