Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Melitta MEBG8B Coffee MillCustomer Review: A good burr grinder for the price Summary: 4 Stars
We have had this grinder for over a year now and use it every morning, and it has worked consistently well. I have not noticed the problems with the grind being too course, as others have mentioned. We set it on 11, and it works just fine for our automatic drip coffee maker. We have tried the finer grind settings, and they do seem to grind it finer. As expected, the courser settings grind it courser.
Twice, we have had a malfunction where you hear the motor humming, but no grounds fall into the container below. The first time I removed the burr grinder pieces, cleaned and dried all the parts, put it all back together, and still the same problem. I tried everything suggested in the manual, and nothing worked. We thought for sure it was broken, but then I noticed that the exit hole going from the grinder to the container was completely plugged with fine coffee grounds. After I cleaned it out with a toothpick, everything worked just fine again. The second time it happened I checked the hole first, and sure enough, that was the problem. To me, keeping the parts clean is just general maintenance, and not a problem with the grinder. Still, it would help a lot if the manual suggested cleaning the exit hole as a trouble-shooting measure. I should also mention that it is extremely easy to remove the grinder mechanism and clean it.
The other complaint that I have to agree with, is that the buttons are very prominent on the front of the grinder, and it is easy to accidently bump one and turn it on. But, the biggest button on the front is the off button, so as long as the lower bin is back in place, you can just shut off the grinder. But, if the lower bin is not in place, and you accidentally bump a button, you will have coffee grounds shooting all over the place. That is very frustrating. Once you have to clean that mess up, you find yourself being very careful to NOT bump the buttons again in the future. This problem could be fixed if the product were re-designed with switches, instead of push-buttons.
I give the product 4 stars, not 5, because of the above improvements that I mentioned are needed. I give it 4 stars, because I think it is a great burr grinder for a price that is not much more than a blade grinder.
