Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Melitta ME12DPB 12-Cup Digital CoffeemakerCustomer Review: If you want coffee that tastes like plastic & you want to peel paint, this is for you Summary: 1 Stars
I returned this coffeemaker after making a single pot. The big problem: it made coffee that smelled like chemicals. The whole kitchen smelled like chemicals. The coffee tasted that way too. The kind of chemicals they use to make plastics. I drank a cup of the stuff and I'm still alive -- that's the only good news I can think of.
All this was despite following the instructions by making several pots of hot water to clean it, before using it with coffee.
Further disadvantages of this dreadfully designed product:
1. Filling it with water requires good aim, because the reservoir opening is a narrow slit. A curved narrow slit. Think of what the moon looks like the night before a full moon -- that's the shape of the slit you've got to poor water into. They designed the product to be stylish, not functional. So expect to spill water. Keeping a big towel nearby would be a good idea. If you've got a funnel in your kitchen that would be even better. My funnel is out in the garage with the motor oil, so I didn't try that, although come to think of it the coffee wouldn't have tasted much worse.
2. It's hard to tell if there's coffee in the carafe. Sure the carafe is clear glass, but it is surrounded on three sides by stylish black plastic. So it's kind of like peering into a black hole - you see nothing at all. If you've got a flashlight in your kitchen that would help a lot. My flashlight is out in the garage, but you probably already guessed that.
3. Atop the tower above the carafe is an exhaust nozzle that directs an impressively focused jet of steam. This jet of high-velocity steam is directed straight up into the air. If you've been hoping to remove that ugly paint from a small spot on your cabinets, and you hanker to blister the wood as well, this might do the trick. Otherwise, be sure to pull the thing well away from painted surfaces.
Any advantages to this product?
Well, the clock feature works. And it did turn on automatically as expected in the morning. So, if you want to peel paint exactly on schedule and don't mind the bad smell, this coffeemaker is just for you. Just don't use it to make coffee.
