Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Medelco 12-Cup Glass Stovetop Whistling KettleCustomer Review: Almost 100% USA Made Stovetop Tea Kettle Summary: 5 Stars
Almost 100% USA Made.
The plastics are very high quality and the glass is the best lab quality glass. The glass is made in Germany but the rest and assembly is in the United States.
I was happy to have had the opportunity to speak with the owner of the company and she gave me some history on the compnay and how her products are made. She would like to have had these mad here in the USA entirely but the quality of lab glass is not available here right now. She was very nice ..heard her dogs in the background.
Don't lift the Thumb Tab when the water is boiling - use your thumb to depress it. No burns that way.
One thing I would like to see some mention on how safe the pastics are when heated, are they tested to be non toxic? I'd presume so.
Thank you Medelco.
Customer Review: I love this tea kettle! Summary: 4 Stars
For years I had used a famous-brand, expensive enamled kettle (and previously other expensive stainless steel and copper kettles). The inside corroded in an alarming way in the former and the latter imparted a marked metallic taste to the tea. In exasperation, I decided to try glass and not to spend a fortune, this time. Presto - this Medelco tea kettle has solved my problem. I do not need to make 12 cups so its somewhat limited volume capacity is fine for me. The handle gets hot but not too hot. I can see the water so I can catch it just prior to a rolling boil, to make tea at an ideal temperature. The whistle works adequately and is not too loud or shrill (which I like early in the morning). The kettle has a smallish footprint and is simple, inexpensive, sturdy enough and easily cleaned. I am perfectly satisfied.
Customer Review: great deal, great kettle Summary: 5 Stars
I have to note a couple of things. First off I research a lot of the stuff I buy this kettle included. In some of the reviews customers mentioned hot handles and having to use two hands to pour because of the lid. One review mentioned off setting the kettle so the handle isn't in the line of fire/heat. This worked amazingly, the handle was quite cool. As far as the lid issue, perhaps the design has changed? The lid has in big letters remove lid prior to pouring, I remove the lid before taking the kettle off the stove to pour. I have uploaded a picture of my kettle sitting off center on my electric stove. Everything else about the kettle is true; loud whistle, easy to clean, fast boil. In short THIS IS A GREAT KETTLE FOR UNDER $15. I had an electric plastic kettle but I am phasing out all plastic that is used with heat.
Customer Review: Not bad but be careful.... Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this teapot because it had a whistle and was much less expensive than the other tea kettles. At first, the handle was flimsy, but I tightened the screw and all seemed fine. I used it on a gas range. Overall, other than the handle getting too hot for it to be picked up without oven mitts, it worked well. After a few months, my daughter was using it to boil water (obviously) and the lid melted right to the pot! I realize that it says not to use it over too high heat, which we didn't, but that was just ridiculous. I consider that to be a fatal flaw in the pot and therefore, will not be ordering another. I have decided to splurge and buy a nice, heavy weight stainless steal pot. I figure that way I'm not worried about breaking it and can use a higher heat setting. My water might boil a little faster too...
Customer Review: Good value overall Summary: 3 Stars
A lot of tea kettles just don't work very well, especially the ones with the flip-up lid over the spout, which in my experience tend to pour with lots of spills. After having one melt down on me, when I couldn't get to it for only 30 seconds or so, I was eager to find a better alternative. This pot is a good size, and I enjoy having a glass kettle - you can see that the kettle is actually clean inside. All in all, I am pleased with it: it's a good size, the handle stays cool enough that you don't need a potholder to pour. My only beef is with the whistling lid. I took it off when I first received the kettle to wash everything and I've never been able to get it back in place. It does not easily snap back in, even with a lot of pressure. So now, my kettle works fine, but without a top (and without a whistle.)
