Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Medelco 12-Cup Glass Stovetop Whistling Kettle

Customer Review: Pretty good
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had ceramic, metal, and electric kettles before settling on this one. I think this kettle definitely has more pros than cons and in my opinion the best kettle $12 can buy. I drink very light green teas, metal kettles and plastic electric kettles leaves a hint of metal and plastic taste. The water so great from this kettle.

By the speed of boiling the water, it is a bit slower than my electric kettle, and almost the same speed as my metal kettle. The plastic lid is easy to remove. The handle does get a little hot after a while, but in most cases it's cool enough for me to handle comfortably, just don't let it boil for 10 minutes after it whistles.

Pros:
-water tastes great
-easy to clean and no calcium build up
-sturdy

Cons:
-handle gets a tad hot, but ok enough to handle
-a bit slower than electric kettles

Customer Review: My First Tea Kettle
Summary: 4 Stars

I am only ranking this 4 star because of the price. My first inclenation would only be three stars. That's not to say this isn't a nice little kettle, just not what I was led to believe.

First off the handle must be removed to pour, which means it will eventually get lost, which means when it does it won't wistle, which means I will be sad.

The second thing is the little wire hickey that goes between the stove eye and the kettle. Com'on people! We put a man on the moon nearly 40 years ago and we can't figure out a cost effective way of keeping that little jingus on the bottom of the kettle? And of course the little sucker will get lost faster than the stupid lid!

Over all it seems like a nice kettle, just not what I had in mind. Probably was there somewhere in black and white right in front of me, but who reads these darned reviews anyhow?

Customer Review: Watch the water boil!
Summary: 5 Stars

Have used this kettle daily for about six months and highly recommend. Perfect for those who prefer to avoid the metallic taste imparted by stainless or porcelain-clad products. It's easy to clean (dishwasher safe for those who prefer that method) and I like the "visibility" factor. Used over medium-high heat (gas range), I have had no issues with handle becoming hot. While the carafe holds 64-oz. filled to brim, manufacturer recommends a capacity of 48-oz. (See the Amazon-provided photo of carafe.) Note that the 12 "cup" capacity listed on box, and in Amazon's description, is based on a European cup size (4 oz.) and not the standard US cup size (8 oz). Still, 48-oz. of hot water goes a long way in making multiple cups of tea/coffee. The whistle is loud enough to hear over family noise and a room away. All in all, a good buy at a good price.

Customer Review: What's not to like?
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently decided I would like to limit drinking beverages from metal, i.e. coffee pots, canned soda etc. and this tea kettle starts the process. Using filtered water from the fridge boiled in the Medelco kettle and a Chemex beaker/ filter combo, freshly ground coffee makes the best brew I could have. The Medelco kettle works as it's supposed to work with a snug fitting cap and I use the whistling hole to insert a thermometer in order to have the 102 degree water to pour over the coffee grinds. It is used it on a gas stove (no need for a wire insulator) and it is heated over the smallest burner so as not to have the flames come up the side and overheat the handle. It's neat, clean and functional AND it's glass so be careful not to bang it around.
P.S. I also drink Irish tea and it's never been better!

Customer Review: Very nice albeit fragile
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this tea kettle strictly for making coffee with my Chemex 10 Cup Coffee Maker. It does exactly what it says... boils water and whistles! My only worry is that the glass seems very thin and breakable so if your often breaking things while washing dishes, this may not be the tea kettle for you. On the other hand, I believe the thin glass allows the water to boil faster. If given the option, I would opt for thicker glass and slightly longer boiling time (my reason for 4 stars instead of 5). Other reviews have complained of the handle getting hot, but I have yet to experience this... perhaps turning up the heat all the way on a gas stove could cause this. All in all a great tea kettle that looks very nice in a modern kitchen!
