Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Medelco 12-Cup Glass Stovetop Whistling Kettle

Customer Review: Didn't whistle.
Summary: 2 Stars

This glass kettle is pretty, but as other reviews have mentioned, there are a lot of defective ones being sold that don't whistle. I happened to get one, which sucks, because I got it as a present for my mom. She opened it and I wanted to show it off, so I filled it half full, put it on the stovetop, and it boiled, but no whistle. Not even a peep. I tried it again with the same result, so I guess I got a defective one. Also when I put it on medium-high heat it got a little brown on the bottom, so I couldn't return it. Also the lid is annoying to fit on and take off, which you have to do to pour. It was altogether a failure of a purchase. I have this one Creative Home Satin Splendor Metallic 2.8 Quart Whistling Tea Kettle, Cranberry at home, and it works great and is larger besides. I'd highly recommend buying that one instead.

Customer Review: Shattered after less than two months of use!
Summary: 1 Stars

For the record, I didn't pour cold water in it when it was hot. I purchased this kettle on June 20, 2009.
I was pouring hot water out of the kettle into my teapot when it just randomly shattered in my hands. I was left with a large fragment of glass attached to the handle I was still holding and glass all over the stove and counter top. Needless to say, I was very shocked and upset.
Called Amazon and they told me to call the manufacturer. I honestly am not pleased because I bought this through Amazon and I would have preferred that they just either sent me a new one or refunded the price and dealt with the manufacturer themselves. Called Medelco and got shunted to voice-mail because it was 12 after five.
Even if they refund me the price or send me a new one, this one-star review will not change because it seems that I either got a faulty kettle or the quality is suspect. Either way, not pleased.

Customer Review: What they say is true...
Summary: 3 Stars

I love this glass kettle. The handle does get hot if you use high heat on the flame center. My solution has been to place the kettle off-center over the flame, and this usually works. If not, use a hot glove or cloth.

I shot a short video clip of the teakettle boiling water that I posted on my devnotes posterous blog. If you have nothing better to do you can go watch it, especially if you have any doubts that the kettle works when heat is applied.

None of my three glass teakettles has broken. The first two boiled away all the water and melted the plastic top. The kettle is a goner after that, but fortunately they are not expensive. If you don't snugly fit the top in, it may not whistle and warn you, or if you disregard the whistle long enough this will happen to you eventually. If I didn't like the design of these kettles, though, I would not keep on replacing them.

Customer Review: Fresh ground beans + quality water heated in glass = killer coffee!
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently found a new love for my old bodum coffee press with the recent install of a reverse osmosis system. With the quality water covered, I figured it would be nice to find a glass kettle to heat the water in without imparting any chemicals or flavors for that perfect cup o' joe. Granted, this kettle isn't much for the eyes- as I was unpacking it, my wife commented on the new "Waffle House" kettle. It's fun to watch boil, and boils almost as quick as the stainless kettle my wife still uses for tea. No problems on the glass top range, the included wire ring is only needed for the coil tops. I did notice that when heating to a boil, the three legs that snug the plastic top into the kettle relax a bit and don't return to the tension they had as new. Perhaps a glass top with a silicon seal would work better. I love how it sounds like a rabid turkey during mating season! Can't beat it for the price.

Customer Review: Simple and Affordable Tea Kettle
Summary: 4 Stars

I enjoy quality tea and coffee (for my French press), and was looking for a new kettle.
Of the few glass kettles I researched, I found the Medelco to be the best bargain.

Price: Definitely affordable and was a great value. Of the other kettles I've researched, for example, the Adagio glass tea kettle, cost more than twice the price and without a whistle.

Quality: Although this kettle is not as thick as I would like, it is of decent quality. Unlike the whistle on my metal teapot, the plastic didn't warp. I also appreciated the neutral flavor of the water after boil.

Shipping: The shipping was free through Amazon Prime, which I appreciated. The delivery was quick and handled well. There were no problems in the shipping of this fragile product.

Comments: If you want an affordable glass kettle, Medelco is probably your choice.
