Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Medelco 12-Cup Glass Stovetop Whistling KettleCustomer Review: Absolutely love it! Summary: 4 Stars
First of all I have no idea about the complaints I'm reading here from some Amazon's users. First of all, the lid is not hot at all. I have no idea how some people can complain about the lid getting so hot it's untouchable. Immediately after the water boiled, I grabbed the lid and flipped it. It was luke warm to the touch. That's it. Not scalding hot as some would suggest. Secondly, I find there is nothing wrong with the handle. It's long enough for me to grab a hold of it and it doesn't get hot. What more can you ask for? I filled the water capacity beyond the limit and everything worked out. I have no idea how some users are saying that you can't put too much water in it because it will spill or whatever. That's just nonsense. As long as you use medium heat, everything should be fine. The whistle factor could be a bit louder but it's decent enough for my tastes.
I'm only deducting a star from this product because I'm not that satisfied when I'm pouring water out of this kettle. Other than that, I love the product. It looks beautiful and most importantly, leads to a healthier lifestyle because I now can throw away my rusted steel kettle.
Customer Review: Quality, Simple, Affordable Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this as a replacement to a traditional stainless steel kettle that began to rust and leave deposits in my water after boiling.
I use a kettle each morning to boil water for my french press coffee and oatmeal. With my previous kettle, I had to measure water in a separate measuring cup for my coffee and oatmeal, then poured it into the kettle for boiling. This kettle eliminates having to use a separate measuring cup because it has dash marks 3-7. I'm not exactly sure what the each of the numbers translate to cups or oz.'s-wise, but I know that dash 5 is 24 oz and dash 7 is about 27 oz. This kettle boils water efficiently without any traces of anything iffy--just as a good kettle should. The handle stays cool enough to the touch with bare hands, although I recommend using oven mitts with ANY kettle to avoid potential scalding.
The manufacturer's suggest boiling water on medium heat/flame. This means it takes longer to reach a boil. It takes approx. 10 min. to boil 27 oz. of water on my gas cook top. My previous kettle could take high heat and only took 5 min. for the same amount of water.
Customer Review: second one broke even sooner Summary: 2 Stars
I just bought my second kettle after the first one broke. I realized I was doing a few things wrong with the first one, i.e. using high heat and letting the kettle touch the electric burner (I always used the diffuser, but sometimes the kettle would tilt to one side and come into direct contact with the burner on one little spot. I also used a Brillo pad to clean the outside. But I really loved how fast the water would come to a boil and especially the fact that the boiling water doesn't come in contact with any plastic components. So when the first one broke after maybe about a year, I got a second one. With the second one, I used two diffusers (always making sure the kettle was never touching the burner), only set the heat to medium, and used just a regular sponge to clean it. After about 3 weeks of use, I noticed a warped section about the size of a quarter that had developed in the center of the bottom, as well as a crack along the edge of this warped section. Bummer. I'm now looking for another brand, maybe just a metal kettle of some kind.
Customer Review: Good enough Summary: 3 Stars
Ordered this to boil water for tea and it works fine.
PROs:
*Price - least expensive tea kettle I've come across. The others run at least $35 and up.
*Clear carafe - kinda fun to see water boil. And if you are a tea drinker and need hot water before the boiling point, this makes it easy.
*Glass carafe keeps the water from absorbing any flavors (like metal tea kettles).
CONs:
*Handle gets HOT! So hot that I needed to use oven mitts to hold it and pour. I can usually handle hot items but wow, this gets unbelievably hot!
*Need to remove the lid to pour water... I was afraid that the steam would burn my hand lifting up the lid (which also gets hot), although it doesn't seem to. But I'm still hesitant and careful.
*Whistle is weak... can't tell if it's at full boil or almost boiling.
*Opening is pretty small. I have small hands and I'm able to barely squeeze through to thoroughly wash out the inside but anyone with larger hands may not be able to.
Customer Review: Read this BEFORE you buy... Summary: 2 Stars
Like many other I was attracted to this item because it appeared to be a better alternative to cleaning metal teapots. This item is a total waste of money.
Cons:
*Takes 20 mins to boil water (manufacturer recommends using on low to medium heat)
*Very flimsy (once water FINALLY boils you're afraid the pot will shatter in your hand)
*Whistle barely audible (cannot hear the so called 'whistle' unless you're in the same room with the pot-my dogs alert me when it's done lol)
*Will NOT hold 12 cups of water (only holds 6 and even then it takes 20+ mins to boil)
Pros:
*Inexpensive
Summary:
This is basically a glorified coffee pot/carafe. You can make your own by simply using a wire hanger and an old carafe but why would you want to? The 'asthetics' of this are a good idea, but the practicality is not. Get a METAL tea kettle and move on. I would send mine back but it's not worth the $8-$10 to ship it back for a tiny refund.
