Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Medelco 12-Cup Glass Stovetop Whistling Kettle

Customer Review: Very durable despite how thin the glass is.
Summary: 4 Stars

I got these for my mom, who boils Chinese medicinal herbs. Many of the herbs are acidic and can eat metal, so glass is really the best way to go.

These kettles are great. They're made of borosilicate glass from Germany. It's the same glass Pyrex used to make their glassware with (They have recently sold their consumer glassware division. Anything Pyrex is now only by name, and not of any notable quality). They can tolerate high heat and thermal shock.

The handle provides good leverage when the kettle is full. They look just like the kettles the waiters carry around in diners. The plastic handle can melt if exposed to excessive heat, but is still quite heat-resistant.

Customer Review: And I would recommend it
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm sitting here drinking coffee with water boiled in my new Whistling Tea Kettle (I use melita one cup system) and enjoying the whole experience. No metallic taste! I'd already read the prior comments, so made sure I offset the kettle a bit and didn't use a high flame. Boiling took maybe 30 seconds more than usual at half filled (you get to know these things)and the handle wasn't too hot. So thanks for the advice! As for rusting coil and white residue (calcium deposits?), perhaps drying them off right away would help? Appearance wise, it fits in nicely with my retro kind of kitchen only because I grew up with these things. And it's made in Germany btw, which is cool too. They know their coffee well.

Customer Review: Cool idea, terrible results
Summary: 1 Stars

Seems like a great idea, right? A glass kettle so you can see how boiled it is -- especially great for coffee where you want it less than fully boiling to get the right extraction. Yeah? Yeah? NO. First of all, you can only use this on medium or lower, so it takes FOREVER to boil. A quarter pot of water took me like 20 minutes. Second, it slides around on the stupid metal thing you have to put between the kettle and an electric stove, it actually fell OFF one of my burners that was slightly crooked. Third, the handle's too close to the kettle/the kettle material radiates too much heat so it's unpleasant to take it off the burner and pour. Basically, don't buy this thing. Get a real kettle instead.

Customer Review: Versatile and easy to clean kettle
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this glass kettle! It works perfectly and washes easily in the dishwasher. I've had the kettle for six months and haven't had any problems with it. The kettle boils water, whistles and pours easily. The handle and whistle cap do get hot enough to sometimes need a pot holder (depending on the amount of water boiling and length of time on the burner). The clear glass makes it easy to see how much the water is boiling and it won't rust the way metal kettles often do.

My kettle does get daily use, as I use it with cold press coffee in the mornings and for tea throughout the day. However, I have a gas cooktop, so I've never used the metal insert that is included for electric stoves.

Customer Review: Very good product for stovetop use and keeping clean
Summary: 5 Stars

We will always buy this glass kettle. Always?! Well, we have found it to be very good and sturdy, but if you have the heat on a gas stove too high (doesn't need to be high anyway)the handle gets too hot and may get damaged. We are on our second one in 5 years, but if you are careful it should not get damaged at all.

A tremendous advantage of a glass kettle is that you can see if there are any calcium deposits in it and clean them out with vinegar and hot water. The outside cleans well, too. This is not a fragile item, and I think it could be used for flowering tea if you didn't want to spend a lot of money, but you would have to pull the tea out as this is not a teapot with infuser.
