I recently purchased this unit to smoke my Thanksgiving turkey. I would not recommend buying this unit.
Mine failed miserably in every way. Here are the details of my experience...
The transmitter:
Cumbersome to use as the on/off switch is inside of the battery compartment. The battery compartment is under the clip. So to turn it on/off or reset it to register with the receiver requires taking the thing apart. Very bad design.
The probes:
I was worried the probes wouldn't be long enough to allow me to get it away from the grill. Because it has a plastic case, I really didn't want it within 10 feet of my grill. But upon using it, the length was adequate. I did see in the manual that they offer longer 6 foot high heat probes for $17 each by writing the manufacturer.
The receiver:
The receiver has the on/off switch easily accessible, unlike the transmitter. It also has a clip that pops out so you can stand it on a table.
Setting the smoker high/low temperatures was easy. Although there is no minute/second buttons, so you have to hold the button until your desired temp comes up. This took about 30 seconds to do. A slight inconvenience which can become a major inconvenience if you miss your temperature and have to do it a second, or third time like I did.
On the receiver, you can see your two probe temperatures (food, smoker) easily. There is also a timer that allows counting up or down. BUT when using the timer, you no longer see the smoker/food temperatures. You have to choose one or the other. So for me, I want to see everything at once, so I found it easier to use a second timer rather than switching this one.
After the first 15 minutes of smoking, everything went well. Then, my receiver displayed dashes --- on everything. I shut everything off, and back on (which required taking the transmitter apart) and also losing my smoker high/low settings that took several minutes to enter. It appeared to be working again, however the display on the transmitter was different than on the receiver. It was clearly not updating the receiver. I thought maybe it was distance, or a weak signal, but even putting the receiver 6 inches from the transmitter had bad results. Different readings on them, and the receiver failing to update.
I didn't calibrate the probes, but I found it strange that the internal temperature of my turkey read by a standard (non-digital) instant read thermometer was 10 degrees different from this device. And my BBQ thermometer inside the grill, also analog read 100 degrees cooler than this probe.
I found that difference disturbing, although I'm not sure which one was wrong, or if both were wrong.
Although I love the promise of this product, the idea of remotely monitoring meat and smoker temperature, they don't have it figured out yet.
I am returning the product to the seller and don't expect to purchase another Maverick brand product again.
