Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Maverick ET-7 Remote-Check Wireless Thermometer With 2 Probes

Customer Review: Great new gadget!
Summary: 4 Stars

After reading many reviews and fretting over which thermo to buy I decided on the ET-7. I was not disappointed! What a great and handy little gadget this thing is. I broke it in on my smoker smoking two 7 lb. pork butts for the Super Bowl. I used one probe for the meat and one to monitor the smoker temp and it worked flawlessly! I started the meat at midnight for an 8-9 hour smoke. I put the monitor on my nightstand next to the bed and was able to wake up every couple of hours, look over and see that everything was fine outside on the smoker and went back to sleep! How great is that. And like others have said contrary to some of the reviews you can override the factory settings and set the temps for whatever you like. You just have to read the directions!! The one and only drawback I found was that when you turn it off you lose the clock settings. This is the only reason I didn't give it five stars but I wouldn't let that keep you from buying it. Other than that I am impressed and can't wait to use it again! I would highly recommend this thermo especially for people who like to use a smoker and need to monitor the temps for long periods of time.

Customer Review: Description is great, performance is not.

Bought the ET-7 about a year ago when I first got my Bradley smoker. Have used this product at least a dozen times since then, and here is my experience.

1) Transmitter and remote receiver will not stay "hooked-up" for any length of time. I have had the transmitter less than a foot away from the receiver, and it lost contact within an hour.

2) Both probes into the same piece of brisket, less than 4 inches away from one another, and I get a 12 - 15 degree temperature difference. (I won't completely blame the Maverick, I may have submerged one of the probes while cleaning.)

3) Both probes in the same piece of brisket again..., standard meat thermometer about 2 inches away from the Maverick probes..., 10 degree difference between the meat thermometer and the closest probe. (The other probe was about 18 degrees off). Which temp do I pick? Not happy about guessing on 10 lbs. of pastrami.

Hot happy with this purchase, but I've waited way too long to return. Will be looking for a different manufacturer as I've heard that the other Maverick products have similar problems.

Customer Review: Wish it worked
Summary: 2 Stars

Seems like sort of cheap plastics, but that would have been ok if it had worked. I set it all up and started a rib roast, and everything seemed to be working fine. But after a while, the remote unit would lose the current temperature, and display three dashes --- instead of the temp. Resetting it would get it working for a while, but it kept blanking out, sometimes after quite a while, sometimes after only a couple of minutes. I probably had to reset it a half-dozen times during the cooking of a single roast. It would have been more times, but when I knew I was only midway through and the roast wouldn't be done for a while, I didn't bother to reset it and left it at --- for a while.

The final straw came toward the end of cooking when, although the remote unit display hadn't blanked out, it seemed like the temperature hadn't updated in a while. I reset it and sure enough, the temp on the roast had been rising but the remote display was stuck at a lower temperature until I reset it! So worse than no display, wrong display.

***** for the idea, *** for the quality of build, and zero *s for not working.

Customer Review: Handy Helper for Smoking Day
Summary: 4 Stars

I've used this unit with my smoker for about a year. You do lose the signal without any alert at times, even at a range of a few feet (my smoker is about 10 feet outside the kitchen door from the counter I set the receiver on). I've found that inserting fresh lithium batteries before a long cook (12 hours) helps reduce this problem. Still, it's nice on a cold, drizzy November day to be able to press a few buttons and know what temperature the turkey and pork shoulder is at. For monitoring the smoker's temperature I use a third probe thermometer. My smoker's pretty good at holding temperature, so I can usually get by with setting the smoker probe to go off if the temperature spikes at the beginning of a cook, or goes too low during a long cook. Yes, there is a product that is specifically designed to measure smoker temperature ranges, but I like how you can tweak this unit's temperature settings to do both things, if needed. I've had no issues with the original probes it came with. And replacement probes with heavier duty, longer 6 foot cords are available on the internet. I would buy it again.

Customer Review: Works, but prepare to be frustrated
Summary: 3 Stars

All the bad reviews are more or less true: the range sucks, if it is out of range, it will keep displaying the same temperature, fooling you into thinking you are monitoring the temp when you are not, the connection with the remote is flaky, the controls are horribly designed, and the default temp settings are annoying, as is the alarm.

However, I was, through trial and error, able to get it to work reasonably well. The connection works fairly well at about 10-15 feet through a glass patio door. You can set the temps high enough that the annoying alarm isn't triggered. You get used to the proper sequence for turning the two components on and syncing them up.

The only pro is: there isn't a substitute with two probes that I know of ( or at least one that does not get equally bad reviews). I'd love to have a remote thermometer with two probes that worked well and was well designed, even if it was a lot more expensive than this one, but I haven't been able to find one.

So buy it not because its good, but because its hard to find a substitute.
