After working graveyard shift for 7+ years I've become somewhat of an expert on sleep (or lack of it). Tin foil on the windows, towel under the door, and a fan to keep me company. The fan had to go after many sinus infections and dry, scratchy throats. Next was the Homedic line of noise machines. The first barely lasted a year, the second I made do with for a year & a half before re-gifting to family member this Christmas. The sound loop repeats after a few seconds and the quality deteriorates after a few months. For serious, uninterrupted sleep there is no equal to the MARPAC sleep mate. Even on low it blocks out all ambient noise (cars,people,phones,slamming doors,dogs...), I mean EVERYTHING!! I only wish I had spent the money and invested in this sooner. This product is not only exactly as described, but even better than I expected. It is much smaller than it appears to look in the photos, has the absolute perfect length cord (not too short not too long) and the way it adjusts in sound is easy and very clever(louder for day naps, quieter at night) I bought it for my 19 month old who shares a room with her sister who doesn't like the noise of a fan or air conditioner and they both love it. It is a very smooth, consistent and relaxing sound. The size of it and the cord make it super easy to move to another room for naps. I am very impressed with this product, and highly recommend it to anyone at all, but especially parents. Really fantastic and worth every cent. It was a real struggle to find just the right sound to sleep to. After moving from a house with a great overhead fan (dry mouth inducing though it may have been), I tried several different fans that were either loud, annoying, or were too high-pitched. Hey, I'm picky. Once I saw this, I knew someone finally understood my neurotic plight.
The ability to adjust little aspects of the sound quality is just what I wanted, and the fact that there is no rattle, no whine, and no pattern to the sound is wonderful. The only problem, and it was a big one: even the low setting was too loud. Fortunately, putting it in my closet with the door cracked about 6 inches did the trick perfectly.
Just the right amount of white noise, and now sleep comes so easily.
Customer Review: Replacing One Noise With Another Just as Irritating Does Not Help

I purchased this Sleep Mate based on the reviews on Amazon. At first I thought "this just might work." However, after trying it a few nights, I found it did not help. I kept thinking it was not successfully muffling music noise coming from outside, but everytime I turned off the machine, the music disappeared. There is a background humming or slightly musical sound in the machine that drove me nuts. Even without the background noise problem in the motor and even if it did muffle absolutely everything, covering up one noise with another noise doesn't seem to work for me. Although outrageously expensive, we're going to try adding inside panes of sound proof windows. Nothing else has worked, including this dumb machine.Customer Review: Where has this been my whole life?

The apartment building I live in is very poorly insulated for sound. Desperate, I ordered this to try to drown out a thoughtless, loud upstairs neighbor. I was so surprised that I received the machine within two days of placing my order. It is very compact. It isn't enough to drown out noise completely, but it works deceptively well in blending and muffling any noises to a point where your sleep is not disturbed. I have been sleeping so deeply since I got this machine! I hadn't realized how poorly I had been sleeping before. It's like having the comforting sound of a loud fan on all night without waking up freezing or having higher heating bills in the winter. I am beyond thrilled!
