Customer Review: Can't sleep without it!

I have had this Sleep Mate sound screen (model 980) for over 10 years and cannot sleep without it! This thing is built so well that the "sound" it produces has not altered any all this time. I usually set mine at its deepest yet loudest setting (you twist the outer and top parts around so that the frequency changes via the variation in the size of the openings). I am such a light sleeper that I take this wonderful little machine with me to hotels and when staying overnight at friends' and inlaws' houses. While I got used to the whirring sound immediately (and my masseuse uses one of these in her massage room, by the way), I will admit that my husband took a while to get used to it. Now he also cannot relax or sleep without it. Furthermore, this machine is MUCH better than those that make specific sounds (rain, ocean, etc). I have very sensitive hearing (have played music all my life), so the "track" rotation of those other sound machines makes me crazy. If you are sensitive to music, you will definitely notice the pattern of those sounds. With the sound screen all you get is a constant and natural air-blowing sound from the internal fan.
This sound screen is expensive, but if they still make it like the one I have had for over 10 years, then rest assured that you are getting your money's worth!!

I did not think it would work for me because I've never used fans or radios to help me sleep. It turned out to be great, and not just for sleep. It's also terrific for studying and reading.
The top and sides can be independently rotated to change the tone of the sound, and there are two settings, low and high. Between these four options, you can find a sound that works for you.
It works particularly well for masking repetitive sounds such as barking, snoring, talking, and car alarms. As you have no doubt experienced, anticipating sound is as disturbing as hearing it. Think of a dripping faucet! The Marpac engages your ears and brain so you stop unconsciously anticipating noise. That's my theory of how it works, anyway. Even on low settings, it is effective; it doesn't have to be so loud other sounds are drowned out.
It seems solidly built and takes up no more space than a stack of CDs.
Update: using this daily has had no effect on my utility bill!

The Marpac Sweet Dreams Sleep Machine - for all its cloying, reprehensible name - is a cunning little devil (and, after all, can't be blamed for the name it's saddled with.)
If you read anything that suggests this compact machine can drown out the snores of a loved one then you simply haven't met my wife. (Metallica at full volume might prevail - nothing that fits on your nightstand stands a chance.) However, the Marpac (I refuse to use the rest of the name more than once) does have its charms. Dogs outside the house are silenced. Noises elsewhere in the house are dumbed. But this is not the cunning part - no, that part lies in the soothing noise itself. Try sleeping with this little beauty for a couple of months and then going without - even in a soundproof chamber - and you'll see what I mean.
As for the snoring of the person next to you, there are two things you can try. Try wearing earplugs and try not sleeping with my wife.

I purchased the Marpac Sleep Mate 980 based on the excellent customer reviews here. Last summer we were having problems with our neighbor's dogs keeping us up at night, and I really needed something to help me drop off to sleep. A poison hot dog thrown over the fence didn't seem like the thing to do, so I purchased this product with high hopes.
I guess I am one of the few people who could not get used to the sound it made. I tried it over several nights and the "whooshing" sound was very irritating instead of soothing. There seemed to be no way to get it adjusted to the right, calming effect it was supposed to have. The only thing I can say is the manufacturer took it back with no questions asked, and I got my refund.
PS -- The neighbors finally got rid of the dog. I would rather he had stayed, and they had moved.

My wife purchased one of these white noise generators for a vacation we were going on over a year ago. It is small and very lightweight with an eight foot long cord, which is nice and long. Its small size means that it fits easily into any luggage and takes up very little room on a night stand. The noise it makes is pleasantly "white," which means that it doesn't disturb you while reading in bed and yet it provides enough cover for the little noises that can sound so loud at night. The volume produced can be modulated by turning the top, making it louder or softer.
Overall, we are very pleased with our purchase of this item. We have experienced nothing but trouble free service from it, and we have even purchased a second one for the baby's room. We love this item and give it our highest recommendations!
