Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mario Batali Salt CellarCustomer Review: Very odd Summary: 1 Stars
I received my salt cellar from Amazon and it was defective. There were spaces between the openings and the magnetic closures did not work at all. Amazon is amazingly helpful (as always) and is taking care of this problem. But this is not why I rated it one star, the reason for that is this thing is HUGE! No measurements prepared me for how big this is. It's absolutely useless. Every single time you need a pinch of salt you would have to get this HUGE salt cellar out, you would almost need two hands to use it. I love to cook, I use a variety of salts to enhance flavors, if I had to use this every day I would go insane. The idea behind it is very good; having two different salts at the same time is great. Something this big and poorly made has no use in my kitchen.
Customer Review: Mario Batali Summary: 5 Stars
The cellar has a real heavy weight feel to it and it's made of good quality wood, it has magnets so you only need to push the lid a little bit and the magnet will do the rest for you, it holds a fairly good amount of salt I personally use it to hold coarse and fine sea salts and I love the way it looks near the stove top.
UPDATE APR 27th 2009
I went to a store that carried these cellars and noticed that none of them closed properly and the wood was poor quality, they didn't even have the same color!
I bought mine when it first came out so I guess I was lucky that it was perfect, they probably have a cheaper manufacturer now because the ones I saw were nothing like mine.
Customer Review: Bought 2 - 1 cracked Summary: 4 Stars
I loved the design of this salt cellar and bought two (thinking I would have one always near the stove and one for the dinner table). While I do still love the design (enough to come back to replace one), the inherant problems with wood in a kitchen is splitting due to the grain - 1 has split and 1 is perfect.
Weight is perfect for one-hand use and holds about 1/2 cup on bottom and less than 1/4 cup on top... perfect for iodized salt and kosher salt at hand. LOVE the magnet closure.
I love this design enough to give 4 out of 5 stars and repurchase, because I can't really fault the manufacturer for wood's tendency to split and I am in very-dry-Colorado.
Customer Review: Poor construction Summary: 2 Stars
I went through 3 of these salt cellars. Every one had the same defect to varying degrees. All of them had a split in the lid. Not a gap between the lid and compartment, but the wood was actually split at the hinge. From the reviews it looks like not all have this problem, but I did, and 3 times to boot. I love the design, but wasnt willing to try again, I am convinced all of them would have this problem sooner or later.
For those wondering why you need 2 compartments - The big one is for cooking salt (regular kosher salt or coarse sea salt) and the smaller one is for finishing salts (fluer de sal, smoked salts, various other fru-fru salts which, yes I do use)
Customer Review: What A Peice of Crap!!!!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this product on good faith that because it had the name of such a great chef ... one who I have admired over the years from his show and his recipes. I recieved this product in its original package and proudly put on my counter next to the stove. Two days later I noticed there was a small pile of salt accumulating next to the salt cellar. Upon review I noticed the celler itself split from top to bottom. The wood actually split wide open. I had to mend it with duck tape. Sadly... I'm going to have to purchase a new cellar and this time I will buy one that doesn't have a celebrity attached to it. What poor quality. I'm very disappointed.
