Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Marcato Atlas Wellness 150 Pasta Maker, Stainless SteelCustomer Review: Two defective machines Summary: 2 Stars
I've received 2 of these machines already and had problems with BOTH. I really wish that I had a better experience, as this was such a highly rated machine, but I will most likely purchase the Imperia 150.
Problems with the FIRST machine:
1. Black steaks on the side of pasta when rolling. I would understand if this was present in only the first few batches, but this was not the case. Even after about 20 batches of pasta (each batch was about 2 lbs), there were still black streaks to be found along the side of the pasta. I am guessing that this is from the lubrication on the rolls and gears. At first I supposed it would just take some time before the excess lubricant was eliminated, but after so many batches I was disappointed to still see the streaks.
2. The gears/rolls made a very loud squeaking sound when being cranked on the 0 setting (the thickest setting used to "work" the dough). The sound was rather high pitched. I did some research and it seems that this problem is common when older machines start to lose their lubrication, but this was a brand new machine. The squeaking did go away when I started to go down to thinner settings, OR if I only worked with very small amounts of dough at a time. I regularly work with a dough about the volume of a standard 8oz cup and that would still give me the squeaky sound. In reality the sound didn't bother me that much, but I don't think that it is normal for the machine to do this.
3. With this first machine there was a big scratch across the cutters, specifically the one for the thin cuts. The scratch was about 1mm deep and was very noticeable.
Problems with the SECOND machine:
This machine posed a new set of problems.
1. The first thing I noticed with this machine was that it did not sit stably on the counter. One of the rubber pads on the bottom was not fitted correctly and therefore the machine would rock back and forth--imagine a table where one of the legs was shorter than the other three and it would be annoying everytime you applied pressure and it was rock to that side. When the clamp was on and fastened the machine to the table, it was much more stable, however there was still a visible gap between one of the rubber feet and the table, which I fixed by sliding a piece of folded up paper under it to even everything out.
2. This machine ALSO had a problem with the black streaks running along the side of the pasta, although I wasn't able to make more than 2-3 batches on this machine, so it may be a problem that is due to the machine being very new and not broken in yet.
3. This machine ALSO had the problem of being very squeaky.
4. I noticed that the "marcato M" logo on the machine is glued on. This is not the problem, the problem is that the glue is clearly visible and excess glue is oozing out and I was able to scratch off some of the tips of the glue that was pointing out (imagine the tip of an ice cream swirl.. that is what). This isn't a big problem but I thought I would point it out. I expected better build quality
Overall, I am very disappointed in the build quality and performance of the two machines that I have received. I wish my experience was different, as I believed that this was going to be an amazing product from the reviews. It was one of the more expensive models as well, and I thought it was going to be worth every penny. Issue is not the design but the quality control of this product. I was unfortunate to have received two bad ones.
If anyone has any comments/feedback on my specific problems, I would LOVE to hear from you.
I gave this product 2 stars because I do believe it would be a great machine if it were not defective. I think only products that would totally suck even if they worked the way they should deserve only 1 star.
I will be purchasing an Imperia 150, and hopefully my experience would be better.
