Customer Review: I'm glad I didn't buy more than the try it size.

I ordered the small "try it" size about three weeks ago. It finally came in today. "Oh boy, I've been waiting for these". When I opened the package, I did not hear the "tah dah" in the background that I was expecting. I'm not sure what some of these reviewers are used to smelling like, but the smell of the berries was far from pleasant. Kind of a vinegar, pickled peach smell. But, I thought I'd try it out, maybe they would smell better after they got wet? Well, they did smell a little different...but not good. My idea of "earthy" does not include a wet dog or decaying fruit smell. That's what these little guys smelled like. After doing a load of bath towels, I was relieved I didn't buy a larger package. The towels didn't even go to the dryer. I ran the load through again with my usual detergent to get the smell out! One the up side, I did notice the towels felt very soft. But the smell just wasn't worth the softness.Customer Review: Great for the toughest environment

My husband and I recently took a 14-day adventure tour through the country of Nicaragua. We scaled volcanoes, waded through muck, kayaked and swam, and rode on some lovely (but smelly) horses. Each night we washed our clothes by hand in whatever sink/tub was available with the soap nuts we had brought, and every morning they smelled and looked as fresh as if we had first stepped off the plane. Amazing! I can't tell you how pleased we were with the results. In addition, my husband is a marathoner and regularly runs 6-20 miles a day. This is the ONLY detergeant that gets the inevitable funk smell out of his clothing after a long run. Plus, we only wash our clothes in cold water now because we don't need to use the hot water for heavy stains/smells. Long story short - this product WORKS. I'm disappointed. I've been using soap nuts now for a couple years and they are wonderful for lots of uses, but these are very messy and look old to me. I can't make my powdered cleaner from them. They would make a big mess of my blender, and I don't know what I would end up with. I don't think I want to know. I won't use them in the wash bag in my laundry for fear they will stain my clothes. They are so black and slimy and they stick and leave a mess on everything. I don't like them. I paid more for these than usual, too. What's with that? I'll stick with my regular brand which is hand sorted. It was a mistake to change. I'm boiling these to make my liquid cleaners. They seem to be fine for that. I've been trying to dry some out some for a week, but they are still rubbery and too messy for me. :-(Customer Review: Great Buy

I was having an issue with build up and mold around my front load washer. Upon researching this issue, I found it was a known issue with front load washers especially when you used commercial soaps. Several individuals eliminated this issue by switching to natural soap. So I tried Maggie's Soap Nuts and now I am hooked. Not only has my front load washer issues disappeared but with the soap nuts I do not have to use a fabric softener and my clothes are softer and seem cleaner. It may take a washing or two to get all the build up out of your clothes but you will notice a difference. I have given some soap nuts in a pouch to friends, especially one with a small child who was getting rashes, my friends are hooked as well. Like many, I was skeptical about the cleaning power of these little soap nuts. When I received the package, I wondered what in the world I had gotten into. But I tried them and was pleasantly surprised when my wash came out clean!! I do put Borax in my wash (always have) so I'm sure that helped a little. I like this product so much, though, that I have recommended it to many friends (who all think I'm nuts.. soap nuts!) It will not leave your wash smelling like flowers or some meadow after it's rained (though I don't think that detergents ever smelled like what they said they would), however, a few drops of essential oils on a reusable dryer sheet takes care of that! I am definately hooked on the soap nuts!
