Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of MIU France Zinc Alloy Connoisseur Corkscrew Wine Opener

Customer Review: **GARBAGE!!!***
Summary: 1 Stars

I wish I could leave a review with NO stars but since I cannot, I'll give it one star for being in a box when it arrived! This thing was a piece of junk - opened a few bottles but I expect more than 10 bottles of wine opened for what I paid. It FELT cheap and poorly put together from the start and this was proven with its longevity (or lack thereof:) Most of the contraptions like it are also poorly made. They try to dress them up or put them in a nice box with gadgets to look like a quality piece of equipment, but I've had three different kinds and none of them held up for any length of time. I went back to a waiter's style simple corkscrew, although with my limitations, 5'1", 105 lbs, multiple sclerosis, this is not easy, may have to try an electric model.

Customer Review: Nice little device!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a replacement for a similar wine opener that broke. The wine opener works great; opens bottles in a breeze, and impresses your guests. Unfortunately, most of the similar products in this price range have enough plastic parts that will limit the life of this product. I anticipate that the maximum life of this product will be 100 to 150 wine bottles worth. At a price of $16.99, that's about 11 to 17 cents per bottle. That is not too bad. If it lasts longer than that, even better. Keep in mind that the more expensive wine bottle openers with similar mechanisms that advertise as made of "metal", still have a few plastic parts in the mechanism, which will eventually break.

I would purchase a no-plastic device when it becomes available.

Customer Review: Wonderful Corkscrew!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for a family member who loved ours. Probably the BEST overall corkscrew design on the market. Yes it has been around a while but others including the new "over the bottle neck electrics" just don't work as well...(re-gifted one we had) It's easy to use ( even for those with limited grip strength) , does not leave "cork crumbs" in the bottle, removes the cork from the screw and is very well constructed. Comes complete with an extra cork screw (although we have had ours for over 5 years and the original screw still works perfectly) and a great foil cutter. The down side is that it is a bit bulky to store in a shallow kitchen drawer, so we keep our in a cabinet. Don't waste your time looking at other styles... this is the one that works best

Customer Review: poor quality item -- you get what you pay for!
Summary: 1 Stars

This corkscrew is cheaper than all the other "rabbit-style" corkscrews, and there's a perfectly good reason for that -- the quality of the item is much lower than all the rest. It looks pretty coming out of the box, but the construction is relatively flimsy (plastic in several key high-impact areas like the lever-hinge mount and the corkscrew-turner) and the design tolerances are really loose (the gears don't mesh very smoothly). Also, the supplied plastic is completely useless because the corkscrew won't fit in it, much less actually stand upright in it.

If you want the cheapest possible rabbit-action corkscrew, this is the item for you. Just don't expect it to compare to more expensive products.

Customer Review: Seems to work on synthetic corks to me
Summary: 5 Stars

It's certainly easy to use. The packaging claims that this corkscrew does not work on synthetic corks, but I had no trouble with it on the rubber corks found in Yellow Tail bottles, and that was on my first try. Of course, I've only used it a few times so far, so I can't say whether long term use on synthetic corks would degrade its performance--perhaps damage the nonstick coating on the worm? But certainly it seems to work for now. The stand is nice, too: in addition to holding the wine opener device itself, it has a depression that holds the foil cutter and a notch underneath that stores one of the spare worms. It would be nice if it could store both of the spare worms, but that's not a terribly large flaw.
