The total length of the bar is 20", the magnetic part is 18.5".
Basically, everyone seems to like this magnetic bar. It has a sturdy, strong magnet, and it is a nice size. It accommodates my 9 knives (a couple of 10" chef's knives and 7 more utility/bread/paring knives) comfortably - any more would be a bit of a squeeze.
I used my own wall anchors, as someone else suggested. The ones that come with it would probably work, but they look like they would slip through the wall.

I have had gone through a few knife magnets due to moving and greedy roomates. The heinkle was okay but a little cheap. On this last move I wanted to upgrade. I have always loved wustaf knives so thought the magnet they offered would be a no brainer for quality.... I was so wrong. I returned the one I bought then looked online, found the Miu magnet and gave it a shot at less than half the price. This thing is built well and has the best mounting system I have seen yet. We purchased a 20-inch MIU France Stainless Steel Magnetic Knife Holder for 3 reasons: eliminate the clutter in the "knife drawer", protect the knives' edges and save our fingers when we had to rummage into that "knife drawer".
The knife holder is stylish. Its magnet is very powerful. It currently holds 9 knives. We even have space available for the can opener, scissors, poultry sheers, corkscrew and a garlic press.
We are extremely happy with our purchase.

I was a little nervous buying this product, it had been backordered for the longest time. However when it arrived I installed it with very little difficulty (I had to use my own anchor because the one they included bent under). My knives look snazzy up on the wall and it is easy for my arthritic hands to reach around and grasp the handle easily. It's so much better than my previous drawer & block solution. I ordered the 20" and it holds 11 or 12 knives, plus my herb shears. It's heavy, so you want to be sure you have secure backing for it (preferably studs). It looks very nice and keeps the knives off the counter and out of drawers. In fact, I like this so much that I recently ordered the 15" for the wall near my stove so I can keep tongs and other utensils handy. This item is priced VERY reasonably, too. Compared to other knife holders, it's a super bargain and great quality.
