Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of MIU France Stainless Steel Magnetic Knife Holder, 20-InchesCustomer Review: Thank god for powerful magnets! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm sold on this concept. I bought this product recently to take care of a growing problem in my kitchen. I'm starting to gather an odd mix of cooking blades that defy the opening sizes of your typical knife block. :) All my favorite blades won't fit in one block, and I refuse to let them rattle around in a drawer! So I opted for the magnetic solution. This 20" strip is just big enough for my current assortment of blades, and holds on to them firmly. :) to be safe, I mounted it underneath my wall mounted pots and pans rack, out of easy falling and impaling range while I'm at the stove or counter. :P
I also have limited space in my kitchen. I don't have a small kitchen, but I do have limited counter space. I'm in the process of trying to free up the available space I do have, without resorting to drastic(expensive) measures like putting in a new counter. mounting stuff on the wall or on the insides of cabinet doors = win/win situation. :)
Customer Review: Strong magnets, easy to hang Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a bit of a packrat when it comes to my kitchen, and I'm very protective of my knives. With my new kitchen space, I didn't have room for my under-counter knife blocks, and putting them in a drawer certainly wasn't an option. Hanging them was the best solution. This bar magnet met my needs exactly.
The magnets are sufficiently strong to hold everything from my 10" chef's knives to my 3 1/2" paring knives and everything in between. The only blade that is near insecure is my one leftover from my first set of knives; an ancient boning knife that is a little iffy on the magnet, but is safely between two other knives so the chances of knocking it are slim. Plus, there's some incentive to be able to replace that soon...
Mounting is easy - 1 screw on each side and drywall anchors are included (though I recommend upgrading those with better ones available at your favorite hardware store). Overall good value, and good quality for the money.
Customer Review: very secure yet items easily removed Summary: 4 Stars
Strong enough to hold my 10-inch cast iron skillet without sliding but can easily be removed by mastering a twisting motion that doesn't require great strength - by far the best I've seen. I know, it's for knives, but I want you to know how strong it is, and yes, these racks are great for keeping other tools handy. The downside, however, is that it itself weighs nearly 4 pounds and needs to be solidly mounted - my husband says the best is to the studs rather than just the wallboard. The complaint is that the mounting brackets are spaced at a non-standard 19 inches. My other complaint is that I was expecting a 24-inch magnetic strip. In reality, the magnetic part is closer to 18 1/2 than 19 inches and the overall length is 20 inches. Also, the attractive stainless steel shows fingerprints and scratch marks, so be realistic about your own expectations. I've tested other racks that are strong enough to securely hold knives, but don't have these problems.
Customer Review: Great to retire the countertop knife block! Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent alternative to the traditional oak knife block taking up space on the counter. Nice construction, strong magnet that holds knives firmly. There were no instructions included but the only thing that took a moment to realize was that I had to pop out the black plastic covers on the ends of the bar in order to have access to the bracket that you screw to the mounting surface. As others have said, the knife bar is HEAVY. However, careful measurement for and installation of the screw anchors and having a rachet screwdriver, installation was painless. Now my knives are always available where I typically prepare items to be cooked. If you're tired to a knife block taking up valuable counter space, this knife bar is definitely something I recommend you take a look at. Amazon was very quick shipping this; I ordered it on Wednesday and it was delivered to my home in Dallas early Friday afternoon.
Customer Review: Worth every penny Summary: 5 Stars
This was purchased to replace a 12" magnetic bar, which was getting dangerously crowded. I am really pleased and impressed; the bar is made almost entirely of steel (from the pictures I thought some parts might be plastic). Front surface is polished, frame is satin, if this matters any. If you're drilling into drywall, don't even think of skipping the wall anchors (included) - this bar is HEAVY. It fits all my knives, a Microplane grater, scissors and honing steel, with just a little room to spare. I didn't see any instructions, but it's not difficult to figure out - 2 plastic pieces on the ends hide screw holes and can be removed to insert screws, then replaced afterward. The price is very reasonable for the quality; I saw a Global knife magnet selling for $175 - now that's outrageous! Besides being roomy and functional, it also looks really sleek.
