Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of MIU France Bamboo Cutting Board, 6.5" x 6.5"Customer Review: Excellent-NotQuiteAsPictured Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent cutting board, but the picture here is slightly off. The real 6.5"x6.5"x1.25" version of this board has 7 rows of the dark carmelized bamboo elements, not 11 as shown in the picture. The result is you get a board that is thicker than you expect, a nice bonus that makes it seem even more robust than it would have been. Also, the dark bamboo is slightly richer in tone, and darker than the picture.
It is extremely dense and can resist water, but it will scratch if you use super-sharp or perhaps serrated knives and press hard on it. My knives left it with some scratches, but I don't expect to keep it nice forever. I would rather protect the knives than have a perfectly unscratchable surface. If you do scratch it, it wouldn't hurt to apply some oil to it to reseal it. It is virtually impermeable to water until it becomes scratched. All in all, I would buy it again, it is the best-looking cutting board I have. Don't buy bamboo cutting boards that aren't end-grain like this one because they will mess-up your blade for sure (prob. fold it over). Don't cut on ceramic either, which should go without saying, but I do know of some people **myParents**cough-cough** that are hopeless when it comes to taking care of knives. Luckily, they buy really cheap knives so it all balances out =D.
Oh, one last thing, like others have said, the real commitment here is not paying for this block, but removing the label =] Use some combination of hot water, rubbing alcohol, GOO-Gone(R) and scrubbing it. I would try the least-drastic things first. I'm sure GOO-Gone would take it off, but not sure what else it might do to the glue that holds it together. I think just hot water scrubbing worked for me, but I might have used the rubbing alcohol too, which can come in really handy for removing that kind of thing, as well as alcohol-based marker stains. Alcohol can take things right off that soap and water never could, wonders of chemistry!
Description of MIU France Bamboo Cutting Board, 6.5" x 6.5"Our premium select grade of bamboo is 18% harder than rock maple, making it a superior material for cutting boards and home products. And, it's a totally sustainable natural resource. After harvesting bamboo it grows back quickly since the root system is so dense. Our bamboo products are handcrafted using small flattened bamboo strips glued and pressed together with approved food grade glue, no paints or stains are used. Through a heating process, the natural sugar in the Bamboo caramelizes and turns brown to create these beautiful colors. These cutting boards can simply wash off with soap and water. Oiling it with mineral oil will keep it looking new. Bamboo cutting boards make an attractive chopping surface.
