Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of MIU France Bamboo Cutting Board, 11.25" x 11.25"

Customer Review: Won't hurt your expensive knives!
Summary: 4 Stars

This particular board is made with the end-grain facing up - a must for those of you who have an investment in your cutting utensils. With the end grain up, your knives will not "cut" the board rather, they'll "slip between" the fibers thus protecting the ever important sharp edge of your knives.

I have three sizes of these bamboo boards and they are quite striking to look at with the two-tone colors. They are heavier than you'd think although slightly lighter than the same sized wood boards. I recommend you use food-grade mineral oil or bees wax on the board before you use it as the bamboo will absorb some coloring from items you cut. I also found that acidic foods will also stain the bamboo, even after treating the board first. That aside, these are very nice boards, thick and sturdy. Although I haven't had them long enough to say they won't crack, they seem very well constructed and don't have a grain pattern like wood so likely won't split like a wood board can do if you let it spend too much time soaking and/or let it dry out too much.

I like them and hope they give the years of service I expect from them.

Customer Review: Pretty and functional
Summary: 4 Stars

I was a little worried after reading some of the other reviews, but haven't had many issues.

The glue wasn't nearly as difficult to remove as I thought. Rubbed mineral oil on top of the sticker, let sit about 30 sec to 1 min, then used a razor blade and scraped it off. Pretty simple. Didn't even leave a mark, and I was going to oil the board anyway.

Arrived perfect and hasn't cracked after 3 months of 3x/day use. It' my main cutting board for fruits, veggies, bread and cheese. I do not soak the board.

Fits well on my small kitchen counter, and also fits well on my kitchen table as a server for whatever I just cut.

My only complaint with this board is it slid around when I cut. I put silicone feet on the under side immediately before oiling, and now it does stay in place.

I'm planning on buying the smaller version as well.

Customer Review: Best cutting board I have used, and I've used many
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm surprised and sorry to hear the experiences of reviewers here whose boards cracked, because what has really amazed me about this board is that after over a year of daily use and abuse and washing in hot water--and I did not treat my board with oil or wax--this board has held up beautifully, with no cracks whatsoever, and because it is an end-grain board, it has been very kind to my knives and seems to self-heal its own cuts. LOVE it and now will consider nothing else. This is utterly unlike the NON-end-grain bamboo boards out there, which, as another reviewer mentioned, will get very torn up very quickly by knives. What is more of a surprise is that this has held up so much better than several hardwood end-grain boards I've used, ALL of which have developed major cracks. And obviously this beats plastic since it won't poison you and it won't harbor bacteria. Highly recommended!

Customer Review: Love the board, hate the packaging!
Summary: 4 Stars

I absolutely love this cutting board. It works well with most knives (don't use the serrated knives with tiny teeth). The board is very forgiving with repeated cutting. They are very heavy and very attractive. The only complaint I have is the paper packaging stuck to the board. I've bought 3 of these and I couldn't get all of the "glue" off any of the boards. I eventually just put the oil on the boards to protect them and that somehow helped get most of the sticky residue off. MIU France really needs to use something that will not permanently stick to the boards. I'd give it a 5 star if the sticky residue and paper came off easily.

I bought this board in spite of the caveat about the sticky glue. Here's what not to try. First, I laid wet sponges on the glue for a couple of hours, then tried to scrub the glue off with a 3M green thing. Then I tried WD40 as a solvent (the glue got stickier), and tried more scrubbing. Then acetone, bad-bad (This will whiten the surface). Then I oiled it. I still has marks, but after a couple of years of use no one will notice. It's a neat board otherwise.
