... which means they are LOUD. They are called LunchBots (is that a Transformers reference?) but they don't transform or fold out or have hinges or anything. They are plain, basic, *sturdy* stainless steel eating utensils. At first they are all shiny and pretty, but unlike plastic stainless has to be wiped down or you get fingerprints and water spots and other smudges that make it look dirty five minutes after you washed it. I am looking at mine now and wish I had towel dried them instead of leaving the air to do the job.
I do like the carefully rounded off edges. There is no way to cut yourself on these. The rims of the cups, bowls and the edges of the plates are folded over (it looks like "twice") to ensure there is ZERO chance of your kid slicing a finger. This is a small thing, but it really shows the dedication to quality "LunchBots" has committed to in making these.
"Healthier than plastic, safer than glass." That is the slogan in the package. Well, yeah, you don't get the permanent staining or taste/smell saturation you do with some plastics. You can safely store chili, spaghetti, or pretty much anything (fish) and not be stuck forever with a smelly/discolored bowl. BUT unlike plastic these are subject to denting and they are loud. If you have kids, imagine them banging stainless steel cups and plates. This can get annoying very quickly.
But they are fun. I feel like I am camping when I use these--until I leave them in the sun (metal gets VERY hot in the sun--mmmm newsflash there...)
So, the verdict? Well, they are well made and stylish in a minimalistic way. There is just something about them that makes mealtime fun. They feel like camping but are elegant enough (in a classic "simple" way) that you don't feel like you are really roughing it. The cup and bowl are light, but the plate is surprisingly heavy, as if it was purposefully made thicker than necessary for either durability or possibly heat insulation. I don't know--they didn't come with a manual. I do like the quality though. If you are in the market for some durable metal serving containers, you really can't go wrong. These are far superior to anything you will find in a camping store, and so much nicer to eat off of (I didn't get any utensils, so remember to pack a fork and spoon).
I really like them--but they are metal; and metal has its drawbacks (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). But I would not buy any other metal bowls and plates. These are the best I have ever seen.
UPDATE (3 weeks later): The more I use these, the more I like them. Stainless steel has a quality I would have never guessed. It is a great insulator. These dishes are not particularly thick (about as thick as a normal plastic plate at home) but the bowl keeps cereal cold MUCH LONGER than plastic or china, and the same goes with heat. This applies to the cup and plate as well. To me this means I can enjoy a meal that stays warm (or cold, as the case may be) longer. This is a small luxury, but an unexpected one, and it really enhances the enjoyment of the meal. I would add one more star if I could. And these dishes are still in immaculate condition. It turns out they are amazingly easy to clean and don't carry any residue (unlike plastic) or add any flavor (unlike other metal utensils and dishes I have used in the past). VERY highly recommended.
