I rated this item 3 stars because it is a versatile piece with a variety of uses - if you receive one that is not broken into pieces. When it first arrived I thought it was delightful until I noticed the plate was chipped. So I ordered a replacement, then another, but they all arrived broken. In fact, as soon as I picked up the box that was left (or dropped?) at my door, I could feel and hear the broken pieces shifting inside - as the delivery truck barreled down the driveway and drove away. Thank goodness I purchased this item from Amazon, so returns were free and I finally received a lovely unbroken cake stand. Unfortunately, this item is not properly packaged to prevent breakage. There is no cushioning whatsoever inside the carton, only bubble wrap adhered to the thin cardboard around the glass which also has no cushioning, so of course it arrives shattered in pieces. What a shame and so unnecessary. After hundreds of these items are returned damaged, perhaps the packing department will correct this problem - unless they read this review and solve it now please.Customer Review: Need to change shipping practices

I ordered this item for a wedding present. When it came, it was packed in a box with a candy dish and a cake and serving knife. There was no bubble wrap or packing around the items. NOTHING!! Needless to say it was in a million pieces. I called and told Amazon what happened. They said they would ship another one right out. A couple days later I received the 2nd item by UPS. That on came intact BUT still didn't have any protection packaging around it. When I took it out of the box, there was a little chip on the base. This could have happened anywhere and was not neccessarily Amazon's doing. But it couldn't be used. Amazon was really sorry that this happened and referred me to one of their other dealers and so I ordered it directly from that company in Florida and got a cheaper price and guess what? It was packed in bubble wrap and alot of it!
Amazon has a lot of wonderful products but I don't get it. How can you send a glass bowl through the mail without any protection packaging? Doesn't seem right!

I bought this for my sister in Florida for a Christmas gift, so I had it shipped directly to her. When she received it, it was broken in hundreds of pieces, literally. She said there was no protective padding or packaging for such a fragile item. I called Amazon.com and they immediately sent her a new one. Fortunately, it arrived without any damage, which was remarkable, since there was still no protective padding or packaging and the box was flimsy. According to her, the item is very beautiful, simple elegance, and she especially liked the beading detail around the rim, also the versatality of the piece, as it can be used in many ways. However, it was disappointing to receive a broken gift. But I was most appreciative that Amazon replaced it immediately. However, they need to reconsider their packaging for such a fragile item. I'm rating at only 3 stars because of the packaging. A very nice piece and gift, if you want to take a chance that it will be received in one piece (no pun intended). I recently purchased this 4-in-1 cake dome and have made good use of it! Its versatility is absolutely astonishing! On the two occasions I've brought it in front of guests, they've complimented it immensely. The first time, I served a variety of baked goods and chocolate fondue. The second time, I served a cake. A friend complimented that it looked very attractive and that I have "the nicest dishes". She actually referred to the fondue service and the cake dome, thinking they were two separate pieces until I told her about the 4-in-1 versatility of this item! The dome is VERY heavy, but it is due to the heavy duty lead-free durability of the item, so it's understandable.
The reason for the 4 stars:
As mentioned previously, it is VERY bulky and heavy. The seam link is quite visible on the dome and takes away from the attractiveness of the item.

This is a good price for a cake dome but it is really a serving tray. The anchor hocking ones that cost a few dollars more have a problem with the punch bowl but the Bormioli design does not have that problem. A review on another site advises that the dome is too shallow for cakes. I have a large plastic dome that is big enough for cakes but I need this one for small cakes to be served with tea. I like having covers over food and I prefer covers to be transparent. I am getting this instead of Jamie Oliver's 2 tier party plate that costs $30 or the smallish Lenox Butterfly sandwich tray that also costs $30.
I don't like to buy glass cake dome sets like this because storage is a hassle but I need this for company and this is cheaper. If I lived in the Swiss Alps with two goats, I wouldn't need this, of course.
