Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Original Finish Grill PressCustomer Review: The Mission: Prepare a Lodge Orginal Finish for use. Summary: 5 Stars
The tools: 1 small can of Crisco. A gauze pad to avoid greasy fingers. An oven. An infared temperature tool to keep the oven temp 'honest'...set to 350 degrees.
Place well Criscoed Lodge item in oven, bake for at least an hour, turn off oven, when object is cool enough to remove do that and reapply Crisco all over it. Back into a 350 oven. Do the same thing, again & again. Soon you will see a nice amber colored varnish all over your Lodge piece. And it will be non-stick. Coupled with a properly seasoned skillet bacon can be flipped over with tongs and not have to be pried up with a spatula. It's a little bit amazing, compared to having to chisel up pressed bacon from " non-stick "
Cut your bacon packages into thirds, and that should render the proper size for bacon strips on sandwiches...flat bacon strips, that is. This press can ' level ' four strips.
Description of Lodge Original Finish Grill PressThis original finish rectangular grill press is designed to improve your stovetop and outdoor grill favorites. Great for eliminating curl from bacon or ham and improve the presentation of many other foods. The grill press effectively holds heat in grilled sandwiches and "presses" out unwanted fats in burgers and other meats. The heavy-duty cast iron base has a unique hammered finish and features a safe "cool-grip" spiral handle. Original finish. To season, follow these easy directions - Wash with hot, soapy water and a stiff brush. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Spead a thin coat of solid shortening or vegetable oil over the entire pan including handles and exterior surfaces. Line the lower oven rack with aluminum foil to catch any drippings and preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place cookware upside down on middle rack of oven and bake for 1 hour. Turn off the oven, leaving the cookware in the oven until cool. Your cookware will look slightly brown, instead of the familiar black but it is ready for cooking. It will blacken with cooking. For the stovetop or the grill, this press pushes out the excess fat in burgers or chicken, eliminates the curl in bacon or ham, and retains the heat in grilled sandwiches. Made of heavy cast iron and weighing about 3 pounds, the grill press uses its heft to do the work. The press measures 6-3/4 by 4-1/2 inches and has a unique hammered finish. A cool-grip spiral handle keeps hands comfortable when working over a hot grill.--Cristina Vaamonde
