Customer Review: a pan that will grow old along with you

A little over a month ago I purchased this pan on sale at our local hardware store. Prior to the sale, I was a little reluctant to buy a cast iron pan but after seeing the dirt cheap price I thought, "What the heck, let's test run it!" Am I glad that I did! I come from the younger generation that has become too used to and dependent (gullibly so) on anything that has within it's title/description the word: "convenient." As for non-stick pans being convenient, well I have noticed that the surface of non-stick pans tend to dull after a period of time, which I believe, in part, comes from the cleaning agents used in the dishwasher. When this occurs, you must resort to using some oil when frying thereafter and afterwards...still must swipe down prior to loading it in the dishwasher.
Then, after a period of time you will notice the Teflon slowly begining to peel. I can't help but think that peels of Teflon lost within your food mustn't be good for your health.
So, out goes your mid-priced to expensive pans and out you must go to purchase more.
Well, not this time, not for me...I opted to try the cast iron instead. I followed the directions to properly season the pan: light coat of Crisco, followed by baking it in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour. It came out nicely. Upon cooking foods, I need use only little oil to cook and clean up was/is a snap. No, I don't like washing by hand, however the benefits of this pan quickly outweighs this very minor "inconvenience." Again, I didn't have to use any 'elbow grease' to get it cleaned: a little water and a quick scrub with a vegetable brush always does the trick.
If after reading other reviews about cast iron pans; you are still finding yourself reluctant to purchase one, my advice is to gamble a few dollars on their smallest pan (egg pan) for which you should be able to find under 10 dollars. If you absolutely don't like it, you are not out much money. If however you do like it (and don't be surprised if you do!) not only will you: have a pan that will grow old right along with you but you will be happy to discover the true even heat/heat retention produced with these pans, you will be adding some Iron to your diet and in the long run you will be saving yourself quite abit of money. You may also discover that food seems to taste better when cooked with these pans, so says my taste buds anyway:)
An extra PRO for purchasing this size pan is that it makes for a great pie pan as well. The only CON I could find with this line of cookware is that the handle can become a little too hot to comfortably handle. A potholder solves this situation.
I'm sold on cast iron cookware and currently I have a cast iron pizza pan on order and will be ordering a larger Lodge pan as well. I will never go back to "non-stick" pans again.
There is a reason cast iron pans are still in production...they've truly withstood the test of time, unlike any other pan.
These pans are definitely worth a try, I doubt you will be sorry in doing so.
