Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Original Finish Camp Dutch Oven Lid StandCustomer Review: Not what I expected Summary: 2 Stars
I have some cast iron Dutch Ovens from Lodge that are of great quality and made in the USA, which I highly recommend. Bought this Lid Stand expecting the same quality but was very disappointed to discover the stand was not leveled and was unstable enough that it was not safe to put a hot dutch oven lid on it. I was also surprised it was made outside the USA.
Called Lodge about the problem and they said nothing they will do about it and I need to call Amazon.com to fix the problem. Amazon was great and sent me out a new one but it was also unstable. I was going camping and didn't have time to return it again and since it was made of steel I was able to bend it to make it a little more stable and usable but also stressed the pin that holds the lid stand together to a point it may break soon. I also had bought Lodge's 16" Tongs in the same order and they did not work too good (they stuck every time I tried to open them).
I was told Lodge makes all their cookware in the USA and all their accessories outside the USA. I thinks it's definitely worth paying a few extra dollars to buy their cast iron cookware but do not see any reason to pay a little more money for the non USA made accessories which in my opinion lacks the quality I came to expect from Lodge.
Customer Review: Wobbly and unstable Summary: 1 Stars
I ordered this from Amazon, and the one I got was completely wobbly and unstable. When I put my 10" cast iron lid on it (with the lid either right side up or upside down), the stand with lid on top wobbled precariously - so much so that I think it'd be completely unsafe to use as a trivet as others have suggested. I tried flipping the stand upside down and it still wobbled.
So I ordered a replacement, which Amazon promptly sent me, and the replacement had the exact same problem. Apparently the legs are uneven - not sure if this is due to how they are fastened or how they are cast.
I'm disappointed because this is a great idea in theory, and I'm not sure what else to use to put my hot cast iron lids and pans on.
I'd welcome any comments from folks who have this re: whether theirs wobbles or not. I'm surprised to see all these positive reviews with no mention of this problem whatsoever. (Note that I'm attempting to use this on a kitchen counter as opposed to by the campfire, so perhaps the wobbiness is less of an issue when used on dirt, etc.).
Customer Review: Great for Frying! Summary: 5 Stars
The user's insert says that charcoal can be placed under the inverted lid support for the likewise inverted Dutch oven lid and the combination makes a great griddle. I had to try it to believe it. I'm a believer! A few layers of briquettes are needed in order to get it hot enough to sear meats. I found that if the briquettes are placed on a flat surface, the lower ones get starved for oxygen and extinguish. But if a way is devised to raise the lid support and charcoal on a (Weber, or other) grill up at least an inch, all the charcoal will continue to burn and the griddle/lid will reach the requisite high temp. I use a woodstove chimney/top thermometer as a temperature gauge. I've purchased a second lid support so as to be able to double my pancake output. (I have 10" and 12" Dutch ovens.) I assume the lid support used as such would work equally as well as a 'side burner' for all manner of cast iron griddles, pans, or pots.
Customer Review: No more twigs in my stew! Yay! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great item! a must for dutch oven cooking. It does it's job perfectly. It is cast iron so it can also rust and should be cared for like the rest of your cast iron cook ware. I simply spay it with oil every once and a while. As for for my cookware, I do not wash mine. I wipe it out good and place it in the fire and burn it clean. After it cools wipe it out with some newspaper and spray it with oil and your good to go.
The must have list for basic Lodge cooking is:
#10 lodge Dutch (perfect size for most people)
lid holder
lid lifter
hot pad
whisk boom
Wood cooking utensils
Kingsford charcoal
Weber chimney starter
Lodge Texas Treasury of Dutch Oven Cooking Cookbook
Spray oil (PAM)
Great food
Patience
Dutch is a lot of work but is quite addictive.
Customer Review: Love Lodge, but mine must have been a lemon! Summary: 1 Stars
Over the past year I've purchased quite a bit of Lodge preseasoned cast iron cookware and I simply could not be happier with it. This seemed like the perfect solution for our "where do we put this thing" question when grilling meat in the grill pan and using round grill press. It did work perfectly, for about 5 times. Then the bolt that holds the two pieces together simply snapped in two. I was so frustrated that I threw it away (stupid as I should have just replaced the bolt)... but I'm still very disappointed in the quality of this item especially compared to the very high quality cookware I have from Lodge. I also wanted to note that mine arrived very clearly marked "MADE IN CHINA" which I was very surprised by as I thought all lodge products were made in the USA and the product description states this to be true.
Buy with caution!
