Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Max Temp Handle Mitt, Black

Customer Review: Handy dandy on the handle
Summary: 5 Stars

It's a lot easier to cook with my cast iron skillet when I don't have to wear an oven mitt to hold on to the handle or wrap a pot holder around the handle while hanging on to it. There have been so many times in my life when I forgot to pick up a pot holder or put on the oven mitt before grabbing the handle and burning my hand. Mainly when cooking breakfast and the coffee hadn't kicked in yet. All I have to do is slide this Handle Mitt onto the handle and not have to worry about burning my hand should I forget I'm using a cast iron skillet and not one of my other skillets with a plastic handle. I'm using the Handle Mitt on my new Stainless Steel cookware now too. This set of cookware has stainless steel handles which also get hot so I want to buy two more Handle Mitts so I don't have to switch one from handle to handle when I have more than one pot on the stove. My grandmother used to have a Handle Mitt for her cast iron skillet. I'd forgotten all about it until I saw this on on Amazon.

Customer Review: Use it, don't leave it there.
Summary: 5 Stars

When you're using this handy little handle mitt, use it for quick trips. For example, if you're gripping the handle of your skillet, slip the mitt over the handle, do your stirring, shaking of the skillet (good luck with that; cast iron weighs a tonne), or whatever, then remove the mitt again, and set it aside. Prolonged exposure to the heat of the skillet will (obviously) heat up the mitt, and make it useless. When you carry the skillet from the stove to the table, make sure to have another pot holder ready to hold the other side of the skillet, for safety's sake. Do not rely on the handle mitt alone, or you'll find out (as a certain unnamed dinner guest did, when they were trying to be "helpful") that a heavy skillet, and lots of food mean that the chance of dropping the whole kit and kaboodle on your foot increases exponentially with the speed at which you're going.

Customer Review: great for porcelain enameled cast iron cookware
Summary: 4 Stars

I use this in conjunction with my porcelain enameled cast iron cookware and it works very well. This handle holder by Lodge Max always keeps the handles of my cookware at a proper temp. I have even left them on throughout cooking and they have never gotten too hot. They're also washing machine safe (just wash with like colors on a delicate setting). I also like this very much because it looks contemporary in the fashionable black as it matches my kitchen (my only complaint is that the color is starting to fade). It's a great cost effective solution to an otherwise difficult or dangerous chore. Here's a quick tip: to get the same results with stainless steal cookware, simply stuff the hollowed handles with aluminum foil (this diverts the heat off of the handles).

Customer Review: Works, but can still get pretty warm
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this along with the Lodge Logic 12-Inch Pre-Seasoned Skillet, and took it along on a recent camping trip. This is probably not the greatest option for campfire cooking - while we could certainly use it to move the skillet from the fire to the table, it got pretty hot and we often this along with a heavy leather glove.

Unfortunately, I was not able to test it during regular kitchen use, as one of the other campers accidentally left it on the pan handle when it was over the fire and burned away chunk of the mitt. I've not replaced it yet, but when I do, I'll probably go with something different.

Customer Review: Great idea!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I really didn't know what to expect when I bought this product, but when I got it I liked it a lot. I can see where it might burn if left pushed all the way on the handle, but I just simply slide it back towards the end of the handle, leave it there, and when I need to move or lift the pan, just slide it back down all the way on. It works like a good quality pot holder, and is a bit non-skid so it tends to grip pretty good. It fits in the hand well, and works as designed. Convenient to use with cast iron since the heat travels up the handles well, and you always need a pot holder or rag to keep from burning your hands. This is a well made product that works as intended. I'm glad I bought it.
