Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned Cast-Iron Fish Pan
You slow-bake a deep-dish 'cake' of corn meal (preferably ground
at home: you could use a coffee bean mill in a pinch) using this
so-called fish pan. Advantage is mostly being able to have tasty
seconds and not-so-stale leftover slices of homemade cornbread.
Now you don't have to hurriedly hide your hard-earned home-made
cornbread from snoopy visiting neighbors and 'friends' who know
that you make the real thing from scratch (no wheat flour ThanQ)
on a weekly basis. Share all the portions that they care to eat:
you'll still have enough remaining corn bread for midnight trips
to the breadbox. Fair warning: should you be a fish flesh-eater,
keep in mind that other foods (such as corn bread) prepared with
the same pan are possibly going to be laced with a fish aroma...
The cost is steep, but when you consider that the material does
not wear out (it gets better with age, which is admirable), the
original cash outlay can be mentally spread over half a century
(even as a hand-me-down, assuming WWIII hasn't started). Amazon
eats the shipping fee when you insist on 'Super Saver Shipping'.
Since the blessed thing is too heavy for either spouse to whack
the significant other with it, your buying the fish pan won't
directly contribute to Domestic Violence (except perhaps to fish)
21 pounds new in the box means that you'd be daft to entertain
the idea of bringing this vessel with you on a fishing trip to
cook some freshly-caught fish over the coals on the beach. Fat
chance that you'd even catch something edible that big anyway.
Just bring along a pre-seasoned Lodge square grill pan (10x10);
punch B0000CF66W in the general Search box to pull it up. That
pan is one third the weight: seven versus 21 pounds. Study the
features to determine whether it'll do. The grill pan prevents
you from being able to season the fish with subtle herbs and let
its own juices retain flavor BUT when you're out there fishing,
in all likelihood you'll develop a ravenous appetite that needs
no gourmet frills (such as marinating or lemon/dill sauce). Do
seriously consider the Fish Pan as being affordable and useful
on a weekly frequency; the first year it'll cost you $1 a week.
Every year thereafter, you'll have a greasy heirloom to possess
and pass down. On the weekday before payday, you use the pan to
prepare some original nutritious concoction, such as coarse-cut
(old-fashioned) oatmeal and whole corn meal and sun-dried raisin
bread (only one raisin per bite, to cut costs). Come payday, you
can switch to double-deep brownies, using 1/3 to 1/2 as much tu-
pelo blossom honey or grade B maple syrup (instead of the white
sugar, unless you can find JAGGERY sugar without bone particles)
