Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Logic L8SK3 10-1/4-Inch Pre-Seasoned SkilletCustomer Review: They really will outlast you Summary: 5 Stars
Humorous message title from the person above, and it's true. This iron cookware can take on anything, anyday.
Of the Lodge family, I've used the (huge and very heavy) wok and the chicken fryer. The wok I received unseasoned but I found the seasoning process very fun, like a bonding experience, and as long as the oil and the wok are hot enough there is absolutely no sticking. The chicken fryer produced amazing fried chicken. (I read somewhere that cooking bacon the first few times is a great way to break in your ironware.) Anyhow, now I want to buy these skillets, being totally sold on ironware. I love that I don't have to be so careful with them (bye-bye teflon) and unless you really really want to, you can't scratch it (although stainless steel does have some great chracteristics.)
The wok, which I have used almost everyday for almost 2 months, has developed a beautiful, shiny black surface. I take great care of it and it knows no fear right now.
About the tomato/acid comment: I have poured wine, lemon juice, vinegar, tomatoes, etc. in my wok many times and I see no problems. Worst comes to worst, just follow the instructions again.
Customer Review: A Southern Girl's Dream Summary: 5 Stars
I am new to the family of Lodge, but I definitely plan on staying around a while. I was hesitant that the quality of this pan would be poor after checking the price, but I must say I am pleasantly suprised. I bought this pan mainly to make cornbread in and though it is a little large it sure can make one heck of a good pan of cornbread. Growing up in the south I learned quick that cornbread that is actually worth eating must be made with a few simple ingredients: cornmeal, buttermilk, fatback grease, and most importantly, cast iron. Lodge makes the cookware a breeze to use since these pans are pre-seasoned. They're easy to take care of and fairly simple to clean up. I find that just filling it with piping hot water while the pan is still hot removes most of the residue. Anything else can be wiped out with a towel or a sponge, but NO soap. Then just spray with a little vegetable spray while it's still warm and you're all done. You can't ask for easier bakeware. The people at lodge craft their items in a small town in Tennessee. I'd like to think that southerners make the best cast iron, afterall you can't make good cornbread without it.
Customer Review: Great Starter Skillet Summary: 5 Stars
When I was picking out the basics for my kitchen, I never thought I needed a cast iron skillet. They weren't used much in either my home or my husband's home growing up. As I got more into cooking and amassed a small army of cookbooks, I realized that every single one of my cookbooks assumed that I had a cast iron skillet for at least one recipe. When Alton Brown used a cast iron skillet to make delicious looking burgers and tenderloin I noticed he used a "Lodge" brand skillet - so imagine my surprise (and delight) to find out how incredibly affordable a pre-seasoned skillet was!
Yes, the care instructions make it a little more difficult to wash - but it's not tedious and there is a lot of information on the web with tips to make the process easier. I cook on an electric coil stove (no gas hook up) and cooking with the skillet has been a joy - once preheated, the heat is conducted evenly. Certain foods (like fried eggs) are much easier when cooked on the skillet than in my Calphalon pans.
While I'm not ready to ditch all my pots for cast iron, I am very happy that I did decide to add this to my collection.
Customer Review: Can't live without it Summary: 5 Stars
Love it! The size is good for bulk cooking such as 4 servings worth of food. I sometimes take it from the stovetop directly into the oven too and have had no problems. It is a bit heavy but I'm a petite female. Nothing that two hands can't handle though.
Below is contains some of the same info as the 6" skillet review and basically sings accolades about cast iron and Lodge Logic in general.
I love cooking with cast iron because it heats evenly. After doing extensive research on the best cookware that doesn't leech harmful chemicals, I choose to cook with cast iron. Lodge Logic hasn't failed me; I own the 6 inch version of this skillet and a dutch oven. Very durable. Great value and great quality. I almost feel like I'm stealing. I don't even want to try other cast iron products.
Cleaning is a breeze as it is virtually non-stick (without those synthetic chemicals). I can't speak for its oil-free non-stick quality because I love to use olive oil and butter in my cooking (I'm a healthy, organic eater and my research says those items are good for you, especially if you use raw butter).
Customer Review: A fine, timeless addition to any kitchen Summary: 5 Stars
Lodge cast iron, what a great thing.
Properly seasoned and used its practically as no stick as teflon or hard anodized. Dont expect that overnight it takes multiple uses and seasonings to get it there but when its right and its there, in my opinion it cant be beat!
And as for using soap as a no that rule was created many moons ago when soap was lye based and yeah it would eat away at your seasoning.
But as for a little modern dish DETERGENT (Not dishwasher, but dish) not a problem at all.
I use it from time to time if the skillet needs a little help with cleanup and no problems at all.
Just clean it up quick and dont let it sit on the iron and it will be fine.
After all I really cant think of a health department that would appove a restraunt using the cast iron without cleaning it with detergent!!!!!
And start out cooking on low temp and only go up as high as you need to as you learn your skillet. That will help with the initial sticking you may encounter and keep you from burning foods.
Once you learn the skillet and how it cooks, higher temps will be fine!!
