Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Logic L8SK3 10-1/4-Inch Pre-Seasoned SkilletCustomer Review: Outstanding product Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Lodge Logic 10-1/2 inch skillet ($9.63) and a 5 quart Dutch oven ($29.99). The order confirmation was received within a few minutes. Eight hours later another notification was received stating that the skillet had been shipped and the oven was backordered. Both were classified as "Free Shipping" items...no way. A package was delivered by UPS in three days. It was rather large and I thought my spouse made a purchase. The box was opened. It contained another box bubble wrapped. The second box was opened and it contained the skillet...again, bubble wrapped. The skillet was in perfect condition...no irregular pre-seasoning patterns at all. Four days later the oven and lid (fits the skillet too) arrived...same scenario. I have used both and am delighted with the quality of Lodge products. A few minor small pitmarks are on the bottom of each, but that goes along with sand casting iron. Kinda adds a bit of frontier flavor to my new goodies. They are basically non-stick and clean easily if you follow the enclosed instructions. Cooking with cast iron products is delightful....slow, even and predictable.
So, for $39.62...yep, free shipping was true...I received two fine pieces of cast iron cookery (plus lid) and four nice heavy duty boxes (no markings, other than attached small labels on the primary boxes) and a heap of bubblewrap for shipping presents this upcoming Christmas. Another excellent business transaction with my friends at Amazon. Always a pleasure doing business with these folks, to say the least. I couldn't be more satisfied.
Customer Review: My new favorite pan Summary: 5 Stars
After waiting a month to get the thing because it was back-ordered, I FINALLY got to try out my skillet. I love this thing! Most of my cookware is garden-variety non-stick and hardly suited to things like searing steaks or fajita meat. You can run this pan as hot as you dare without hurting it - works great for steaks, and makes an awesome cheese steak. The pre-seasoned coating works as advertised, and the cast iron gives good heat transfer and VERY even heat across the entire pan. I think I'm going to be using this skillet A LOT. A handy suggestion regarding cleaning that I stumbled across on another website... be SURE to use a hot pad while doing this! Immediately after cooking, fill the pan with HOT water (not cold; you could crack it!), put it on high heat, and bring the water to a rolling boil... this will lift debris off the pan bottom. Dump the water and immediately wipe dry with a paper towel, set on the (turned-off) burner briefly to dry completely, and wipe the cooking surfaces with oil. Another note - want those steaks well-done but juicy? Buy the Lodge Logic 5-qt Dutch oven; the lid fits this skillet! Sear both sides of the steak on medium-high (about 3 min each), then flip, reduce the heat to medium, cover, and cook as desired, flipping the steak once along the way (about 5 minutes per side for a small, well-done filet mignon). Your cooking times may vary, but the combo of cast-iron skillet for searing and lid to keep things moist while cooking works exquisitely. Brown, not black, outside... and tender inside.
Customer Review: This skillet is excellent! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this skillet! It cooks far better than my anodized aluminum Calphalon and All-Clad LTD pans. Using the same heat setting, the cooking time is much shorter, because it retains heat far better. Thus, the Lodge skillet is more energy-efficient. For example, when sautéing vegetables over medium-high heat, this skillet cooks them in three minutes, versus six minutes for the Calphalon or All-Clad pan. The cooking surface is virtually stick-free, too, so clean-up is far quicker than for anodized Calphalon or All-Clad LTD.
Sure, it is heavy, but that weight keeps it in place on the burner. Sautéing with two spatulas is easy. The Calphalon and All-Clad LTD pans must be held in place by hand, especially when sautéing.
Speaking of sautéing, here is a cheap test that reveals how good this skillet is: Buy a box of Rice-A-Roni, an onion, and another vegetable. Chop the onion and other vegetable (separately), and set them aside. Using medium heat, sauté the onion (five minutes) and set it aside. Next, sauté the rice and pasta mix (from the Rice-A-Roni box). This step will also take five minutes. Return the onion to the pan, add the other chopped vegetable, and the recommended volume of water. Fifteen minutes later, the dish is done. Total cooking time is 25 minutes. Now, cook this same dish, using anodized Calphalon or All-Clad LTD pans, and the same heat setting. The anodized Calphalon and All-Clad LTD pans will require an additional 20 minutes of preparation time.
Customer Review: Safer than teflon and better to cook with Summary: 5 Stars
This seems to be the perfect size, for that reason I am not reviewing the larger one.
First of all, I resent my parents for not having cooked on these for so many years. Teflon is bad for you! especially for women and children. With this fine product you discipline yourself through the many meals you prepare on it.
The lodge must NOT be abused with extreme heat. I have a very powerful stove that I keep in the medium-low heat to cook the rawest of pork. Once the Lodge is hot, you can keep it in a medium heat and it will thoroughly and quickly! cook anything. Does food taste better? Yes, I know it does.
The lodge actually does not require as much maintenance as it seems. After every meal, while it's still warm, I wipe it down with a tough paper towel. If there is residue, (like dry onions) you had better clean it off quickly because it becomes a pain to deal with later. After about three uses I take my lodge and run it under water for a second and with a minimal amount of soap on a wash cloth rub it down. After you get all the food particles out, rinse and DRY IMMEDIATELY. This is all the maintenance the lodge needs. You must keep it dry and moisturize it! I use olive oil for everything, it's like owning a bamboo product like a cutting board.
No, if you are guided, this definitely will NOT RUST. also, if you have a flat-top stove and protect it against scratches, simply make sure the bottom of the lodge is clean and dry.
Customer Review: Sold on Cast Iron - Easy and Good Results Summary: 5 Stars
I used to think that the best cookware is anodized aluminum Calphalon with the most advanced non-stick surface. Well, there still is a place for those expen$ive pans, but old-fashioned cast-iron cookware is now my favorite.
I already had the 12" skillet and the rectangular grill pan, and decided to get this one because it's only [...], even though the 12" pan would probably do what this one would. Well, for the price, I like having this size -- I cook for one and it's perfect for 2 pork chops. To give you an idea of size, two pork chops fit perfectly in the pan, and 3 pork chops make it very crowded.
Cast iron is as non-stick as it needs to be. Chicken breasts, steaks, burgers, chops all turn out well when cooked in this pan because the pan holds its heat and sears in the juices. That is what I use it for. For eggs, and french toast, and pancakes I go to the Calphalon non-stick.
Cleanup is a breeze. I put water into the pan after cooking (after it has cooled down a bit), eat my meal, and then use a scouring pad without soap to clean the pan. Then I heat the pan up a bit, put a small amount of oil in the pan when it is dry and hot and wipe it around with a paper towel, leaving a very thin coating of oil.
For the price, [...], you can't go wrong -- if you are cooking for more than one though I recommend the 12" pan.
