Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Logic L8SGP3 Pre-Seasoned Square Grill PanCustomer Review: GET GRILLING! Summary: 5 Stars
This Lodge Logic grill pan is a great addition to any
cooks kitchen, no matter what your level of experience is.
It cooks evenly and food will not stick if you
use it properly. The helper handle is great.
Clean up is EASY. I mean that!
The quality of the pan is excellent. Made in USA.
Just follow a few tips for best results:
Heat your pan slowly and thoroughly--patience!
Increase the heat slowly as it warms up. All stoves vary, but I am able to
sear/grill on less than medium heat.
If grilling marinaded meats, pat them dry first so they don't "steam".
If grilling dry rub meats, pat with a bit of canola oil.
Use your exhaust fan, and a spatter screen if grilling less than lean meats.
Once you place the food in the grill do NOT turn it too soon!
Allow it to sear properly so it won't stick.
Bobby Flay videos on indoor grilling are excellent.
Invest in a decent nylon bristle brush for cleaning.
Allow the pan to cool enough to handle, but clean while its still warm.
(drain any remaining oils and fats on newspaper in the garbage)
Run pan under hot water and scrub with brush--quickly!
Do NOT strip the oils out. Just brush out any food particles.
Pat the grill dry with paper towel and return to the stove burner on the lowest setting
and allow the pan to finish drying. Do not over-heat it!
It will only take a minute or 2.
Never soak your grill or use detergents.
Cast iron is incredibly durable, efficient, healthy and
fun to cook with.
Lodge products are the best.

Customer Review: Very nice Summary: 5 Stars
I really like this pan, tastes just as good as cooking on a grill. I orginally bought this for a friend for Christmas, then I decided it may be something I'd enjoy also so I purchased another for myself. I got it Monday and I've cooked on it twice already. The first time for hot dogs and burgers and the 2nd time steak. Both were absolutely delicious!
The pan is great except the smoke is mad crazy. I didn't start the vent fan before cooking on it the first time because I didn't realize it was going to smoke up my house so bad. This time I was prepared and started the vent fan before even heating up the pan. It worked for the most part but the longer it is on the smokier the house got.
Clean up is no picnic either. I came back on here to find the cleaning brush and decided to also purchase the mit also for both my friend and myself. I don't know how they work out yet because I'm not set to receive them until sometime between Jan 11 and 28 of 2008!!! That's dissapointing but I will update when I get a chance to use them.

Forgot to update sooner. The mit for the handle works just fine keeps your hands from being burned. The brush is another story. Not very effective and since you're not supposed to use soap on the pan it's really time consuming and hard to get all of the oil and food off. The brush is not very effective but better than not having anything at all. It's almost as though it's not sturdy enough. I'm sure if it were sturdier it would probably ruin the pan. Guess I'll have to figure something out!! :)
Customer Review: Super indoor grilling! Beautiful grill marks. Great flavor. Summary: 5 Stars
I use this on a gas range. I get the windows open before I start because there will be smoke; I'm not taking any stars away from this product because there is smoke--there would be a lot more smoke if I dragged the grill inside. I pour oil into the bottom and smear it around some. Crank up the heat. Grill. If you are grilling more than two batches of hamburgers, the smoke does get too extensive in that amount of time. Something with less fat like steak or vegetables gives you a little more time.
Sometimes I put a random lid over the top to radiate some heat back to get the cooking done a little faster. Sometimes I'll start a steak in the oven at 275 for 20 minutes and throw it on the grill pan to finish (see May, 2007 Cooks Illustrated. really. and try it.).
I'm not taking any stars off for cleanup either. It doesn't clean itself, but cleanup isn't difficult. After it cools some, carefully add water (something about the deep ridges make water LEAP out of the pan when you put it under the sink) and put it on low heat for a few minutes. Let it soak while you are eating. Use a stiff-bristled brush to get down into the grooves. I even add a bit of soap (yea, I know what the "rules" are for cast iron. I add a little soap) to get the fat off it.
At around $20 I think this is a great deal. I'll admit that if you are scared of cleanup, this might not be your favorite product. If you live in San Francisco and the only place to grill is on the sidewalk (people do), this might just be your new favorite product.
Customer Review: Great pan Summary: 4 Stars
We got this because my spouse loves to BBQ, but our complex prohibits patio BBQ's and the communal grill is a bit of a hike from our door. I was doubly excited because it was the first piece of cast iron I have ever owned.
This pan is heavy duty, beautiful, and produced the BEST steak my husband has ever served (and he's a darn handy steak griller). He used to swear by his George Foreman for burgers, but now he's using the grill pan instead. Juicy good! Several of the reviews here mention a smoke problem, but we don't have that issue. As soon as we fire up the pan, we just turn on our overhead hood to high and any smoke vents right out.
With all the ridges cleanup can be a bit of a pain even with a stiff brush, BUT I just saw the suggestion about boiling some water in the pan first and I think that will solve the problem. The other reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because the pan is really heavy. It takes both my hands and a potholder to lift this baby into the sink (admittedly, I have occasional typing-related wrist problems). It's not a shortcoming of the brand, of course, but rather the fact that this is sturdy cast iron that will last FOREVER, so it's a reasonable trade off. I wish we'd have gotten the longer two-burner grill for when we have company, but it wasn't available at the time. This one is just roomy enough for the three of us (one child).
Customer Review: Great for Cooking Steaks Summary: 5 Stars
I got this pan in order to cook steaks indoors during the winter, when I can't use my outdoor grill. It has worked beautifully. Basically just put a little Canola oil in the pan, sear each side over medium high heat for 2 minutes, then transfer the entire skillet to a preheated oven at 400 degrees for 8-9 minutes (not a minute more). Let the steaks rest in the pan under a tent of aluminum foil for 5 minutes prior to serving. The result is a steak that will rival those cooked on your charcoal grill in the heat of summer.
Also, make sure to let your steaks sit out 1-2 hours prior to cooking, to bring them to room temperature. And only use a tongs to turn the steak once.
Others have stated that there is excess smoke when cooking w/ this pan. I have not found that to be the case at all in my experience.
I was worried about cleanability since the instructions said NOT to use soap in the cleanup process. I have found that using a vegetbable/fruit cleaning brush works perfectly for cleaning the pan each time. It gets right down into the ridges nicely. Even caked-on macaroni and cheese came off without too much work.
I absolutely love cooking with this pan - it just feels like this is truly how meals ought to be cooked, the way the were ages ago.
