Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Logic L8DOL3 Pre-Seasoned 5-Quart Dutch Oven with Loop Handles

Customer Review: great cast iron pot
Summary: 5 Stars

This pot is very nice. i've been looking for cast iron pots since they are better to cook with for a variety of reasons and sturdy. Like everyone else, I've been throwing out my non-stick pots and pans every couple years as the non-stick coating comes off. i got tired of spending BIG bucks on fancy german/swedish/japanese pots and pans that didn't last very long for the $$ spent. here is my breakdown:
Pros-evenly heats up, hold heat very well and keeps food warm even after the heat is removed, gets very hot, nothing sticks, I can use metal utensils, cleans easily since you only need to rinse and wipe down with oil for storage
Cons-heavy, heavy heavy!
it's worth it tho, good value. I was debating between a ceramic coating but my research shows that even ceramic will crack and break off. Since I was looking for sturdy, this was fine. Another concern I had was hygiene, after all, you only rinse it off and wipe it down. I have no worries now, the pot gets way too hot for anything to survive that could possibly grow on it. Just make sure to rinse it well with hot water, and NO SOAP, and wipe it down with a couple drops of cooking oil

Customer Review: Best Kept Secret in Cooking
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the Lodge Logic 5 quart Dutch oven along with the 12" skillet and lid, and have found cast iron cooking to be a revelation. These pots and pans are naturally no stick, heat evenly, and cook beautifully every time. With a minimal amount of care they will last a lifetime and beyond. I am a student of traditional regional American cooking, and was always frustrated when rice dishes such as Louisiana Jambalaya and Low Country Pilau didn't turn out as well as expected. The rice often burned on the bottom and was too crunchy on top. Not anymore. With cast iron, you can produce authentic and delicious results every time, due to the even conduction of heat in these pots. They are also fantastic for frying, and work great for slow cooked stews and roasts. They are highly versatile: You can use them on top of the stove or in the oven. These pots have taken over our kitchen: we now use them for most of our cooking needs. I have come to the conclusion that cast iron is the best kept secret in cooking. Why other, often more expensive and less effective kinds of pots have replaced this traditional American cookware is beyond me.

Customer Review: Old time cooking with old time flavor
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this for Christmas, along with the insert for the bottom. I baked a thick cut sirloin in 2 hours and with the same results (tenderness, taste, texture, and stock) that used to require 4 hours to achieve with a regular casserole dish! It was great! I was merely checking the roast at the 2 hour mark and it was done. The Dutch oven is well seasoned, but as suggested prior to first use, I rubbed the inside well with oil (I used peanut). I start a bake at 500 degrees F for the first 20-30 minutes, then drop oven temp back to 200/225 degrees F for the next 2-4 hours. With the Lodge cast iron Dutch oven being so speedy, I had enough time to remove the beef roast and put in a pork loin. Cannot wait for that to come out! This product will definitely make cooking for my family quicker and easier, as I put the baked meat (once cooled) into the freezer for a quick microwave thaw and into a recipe during the work week. Great comfort food for midwestern winters. Thank you, Lodge, and thank you to my sister for the gift! Very happy with this product. :) And it's made in America!!!!

Customer Review: Good cast iron for a good price
Summary: 4 Stars

If you don't have any cast iron you definitely want to get one, and a dutch oven can substitute for a skillet just fine. It's a little on the small size such that if you cut up a whole chicken you'll have some trouble getting all the pieces to fit, so perhaps invest in a cast iron skillet if you find yourself needing more room. I also recommend that you do not trust the pre-seasoning on this or any other cast iron product and season them yourself. Clean with a cloth in warm soapy water (and then never do this again until you re-season it in a year) and rinse. Coat the pan and lid thoroughly (use your hands to ensure a good even spread) in shortening preferably or canola/peanut oil. Place it upside down in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes, then remove it and pour out the excess oil, then back in it goes for another 2 hours. If your cast iron is a nice deep black and slippery to the touch it's properly seasoned. Repeat every year or so.

This pot is sturdy at a good price. However if size is an issue, you may want to invest in something larger.

Customer Review: Perfect Bread Oven
Summary: 5 Stars

I own many cast iron pans... Griswold, Le Creuset and Lodge and I love them all. For those who have issues with cast iron...Each type of pan has it's use and when you use a pan for things it was not intended for you will probably have issues. I purchased this 5 quart pre-seasoned dutch oven to bake bread using the book "My Bread" by Jim Lahey. This has worked so well that I have purchased many of these dutch ovens and given them as gifts to fellow bread bakers. Everyone who has used this dutch oven for baking bread will tell you that this the best thing to ever happen to them in the world of home baking. This was reviewed with five stars because it does exactly what I want and need it to do. It will last for generations and generations. Don't forget to pass on the "My Bread" bread book with the inheritance. Just a side note... If you like to bake more than one loaf of bread at a time, a standard oven will hold two of these dutch ovens at one time. You can keep one loaf and make new friends with the other.

God Bless and happy baking :)
