Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Logic L14SK3 Pre-Seasoned 15 Inch Cast-Iron SkilletCustomer Review: too thin for the size; impractical for stovetop use. Summary: 2 Stars
I like cast iron cookware, and i'm a fan of Lodge's pre-seasoned line. But a pan doesn't just win because it's cast iron.
This skillet is huge. Yes, it's 15" across the top, contrary to the description. Yes, it's "only" 12.25" across the interior of the bottom. But that doesn't stop it from being huge.
That said, huge isn't bad. Huge is what i was going for, in fact. The problem is that, on conventional stovetops, it's too big for just one burner. If you use one burner, then the burner behind it is useless. It's also too thin to heat evenly with just one burner. I typically set it to span two burners when i'm using it, at the expense of additional gas and the loss of valuable parallel cooking potential (i.e., being able to cook more dishes simultaneously).
More useful than wasting two burners on this oversized unit would be to buy a 12" and a 10", and use both burners individually. On the other hand, if you have a gargantuan stove top and a large heat spreader, you may feel differently.
Customer Review: Huge, versatile, quite functional, good paella pan alternative Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a big fan of cast iron, and specifically a fan of inexpensive, made in USA Lodge cast iron cookware. Their 12" cast iron skillet is one of the most used items in my kitchen. That said, I wasn't really sure that I needed the huge 15 1/4" version. Then I started looking around for a paella pan. I quickly realized that for the about the same amount of money as a 14-15" thin steel specialty paella pan, I could have this Lodge cast iron 15 1/4" skillet, which is both more durable and more versatile.
It's proven to be good at paella on the grill, and is useful for cooking up a whole mess of zucchinis, or other large batches etc. It's also earned it's keep turning brisket into BBQ. It's big enough that you can make two omelets side-by-side in the thing, (though making them individually in one of the smaller skillets is easier).
Like all of the Lodge cast iron cookware, this is built to last and is very easy to use and maintain. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Great tool for wood-fired oven Summary: 5 Stars
Great pan! I got this pan specifically to expand the use of my wood-fired brick oven. So far I have used it twice to make a paella recipe and it has performed like a champ! I have been careful about putting a cold pan into the oven when it is really hot (800-900 F.) since I know I could crack this thing with extreme changes in temperature. My strategy has been to start the paella on the largest burner on my gas range, first browning the chicken and chorizo and then sauteeing the sofrito. After I add rice and chicken broth and get it to a boil I put the pan into the fairly hot (550-600 F) oven, right on the bricks, and close the door. I check it frequently, adding the shrimp, mussels, etc. and finally a handful of green peas at the end. The paella has turned out fantastic both times, the oak wood gives the paella a subtle smoky flavor. I have lots of other ideas for using this pan, many inspired by the "Seven Fires" book.
Customer Review: My favorite skillet Summary: 5 Stars
I use this pan almost every day. I have a small family, but like to cook a double-batch of almost every main course for leftovers, and this pan allows me to saute without boiling everything. As with all Lodge Logic pre-seasoned cookware, I gave it another coat of seasoning (peanut oil) and baked it in the oven at a low temp for a few hours before using it. It is just as easy to clean as nonstick. I wash it with hot water and a nylon brush, then put it back on my gas cooktop for a couple of minutes to heat. Once all the water droplets have evaporated I turn off the heat and give it a shot of Pam before letting it cool. I cannot recommend this pan highly enough. As far as storage goes, I have a warming drawer in the bottom of my range that accomodates this skillet and my two 12" cast iron skillets just fine. I rarely use high heat with cast iron. I allow enough time for it to get smoking-hot at a medium flame and adjust from there.
Customer Review: It's a workout Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this as a gift for my beloved. He cooks. I mostly avoid the kitchen. My experience with this item is limited largely to washing. Let me tell you: This thing weighs roughly the same as a Volkswagen. I am a strong girl and it's nearly impossible for me to move this pan with one hand.
From a cooking perspective, the gift receipient is very pleased. But even he cannot transfer the pan from burner to, say, counter without a potholder on the handle and another on the lip. To him, this is a plus.
Vegetarians, be warned. I tried using the Lodge for one of my non-meat dishes. I had to throw out the food because it picked up a distinct meat taste. Apparently that's a welcome feature of these pans, which (the manufacturer states) should not be cleaned with soap or scrubbed with steel wool, or the seasoning will be compromised. That creeps me out a tad -- but again, I'm not the cook in this scenario.
