Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Logic L14SK3 Pre-Seasoned 15 Inch Cast-Iron Skillet

Customer Review: Big and heavy, but worth the weight.
Summary: 5 Stars

Frankly, this 15 inch skillet is probably too large and heavy for many people, but its size, cast iron material and weight also give it great cooking qualities and a high degree of versatility, allowing it to take the place of several pans. I'm a big guy, so to me it feels just right.

I use it for dishes requiring substantial heat such as blackened fish or seared scallops, a wok for Chinese and Korean food, and as a roasting pan for chicken, and it does an excellent job for all of those.

Being cast iron, it does require some special care:
*After use, allow the skillet to cool.
*If some food is sticking to the skillet, soak it in hot water for half an hour or so.
*Clean it with hot water and a natural or nylon bristle brush and NO SOAP, and dry with a towel.
*Re-heat the skillet to warm (the Chinese call this "driving out the water demon")and while it is still warm, apply a light coat of non-stick spray or cooking oil.
*Put the skillet away until next time. Because of its size, I store mine on a rack in the oven.
*Be sure to use heavy oven mitts while handling this cast iron skillet, because, in the words of Buster Poindexter it gets HOT, HOT, HOT. But that's why it cooks so beautifully.

Customer Review: Needs its own zip code !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This pre-seasoned (which is wonderful)cast iron skillet is exactly what my husband has been wanting in cookware. We have other cast iron in the 8 & the 10 & 1/2 size but he needed something bigger for frying the catfish & porkchops & chicken, & so on. This brought on a perfect smile when he saw it. I also bought the 12 & 1/2 but I was notified that it wouldn't arrive here until JUNE something !!!! I ordered this days later after the first order yet this arrived in lightning speed!
I grew up cooking with cast iron when others didn't & I just thought my parents were being dinosaurs using cast iron. Even our smaller pots were cast iron. Yes, for a girl I had more muscle strength than the boys, but now I am considering only using this paticular skillet when hubby is at home to be safe. Food does taste sooooo much better cooked in cast iron!
I would definitely purchase this paticular brand again. As you have read other reviews you are aware of the fact that cast iron heats & cooks evenly and food always taste better cooked in cast iron.
By the way, I did throw out all of my T-fal silverstone cookware. Cast iron, I'll never stray again!

Customer Review: Misleading description
Summary: 3 Stars

I have left a separate review for the poor packaging and the condition the pan was received in. I am very disappointed with the dimensions of this pan. I was expecting a 15" cooking surface. The cooking surface only measures 12 inches. If you measure across the outer lip it only measures approximately 14 1/2. This disappointment is partially due to the fact that size is apparently derived from measuring across the lips of the pan and not the cooking surface. I only learned this after doing research after receiving the pan. This pan does not measure 15 inches across though, unless you are rounding up. The pan itself, other than damage from shipping, looks handsome. If it were the size I was expecting I would be thrilled with my purchase. Unfortunately I do need that extra cooking surface, so I may need to order a larger one. I have been cooking with cast iron for a while and would suggest that everyone who enjoys cooking give cast iron a try. I have given this product a 3 star because I feel that they could have better described the cooking surface. I have not cooked with it yet but I expect that I will have good results.

Customer Review: It's not the pan in the picture
Summary: 5 Stars

The Amazon picture of this item is that of a different pan. To visualize this item, think of the handle as having the dimensions of a popsicle stick, with the rest being comparable in size to a manhole cover. Yes, it is that big. The price I got from Amazon, $29.99 plus free shipping, is by the pound about 4 times higher than the world market price for bulk scrap iron, but on the other hand this merchandise is delivered to one's doorstep in the shape of a useful finished cooking utensil, with an excellent preseasoned treatment. If you have a high-output gas burner on your stovetop, you can witness the contest of irresistable force against immovable object. Throw two pounds of mussels into it, right out of the box, or a big steak, or a pan pizza. You might need to order a little red wagon to cart it around the house, but if you've got the wagon already, this is a fabulous deal. This massive, imperturbable object has led me to wonder, who will be using it 300 years from now? Well, if they still have fires in their kitchens then, they'll be thinking the same thing too.

Customer Review: Bad batch?
Summary: 1 Stars

I ordered this skillet from Amazon and, when it arrived, I noticed that a small area around the handle seemed to be peeling. I'm not sure what it is that was peeling, but there is some black coating on this skillet and it was coming off. I requested a replacement through the website - a process which could not have been more enjoyable - and a replacement arrived 2 days later.

Unfortunately, not only did the second skillet have the same problem, it was worse! The peeling area had already started to rust, which was exactly what I was worried about and what prompted me to return the first skillet.

At this point, I called Amazon and a very nice customer service rep simply issued a refund and suggested that I buy the item locally to ensure it is free of defects. I'm not sure whether this was simply a bad batch or if Lodge's quality is slipping. I hope it is not the latter. I can't review the performance of the skillet itself, since I haven't used it yet, but I wanted to share my experience, for better or worse.
