Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Logic 8-Quart Pre-Seasoned Cast-Iron Camp Dutch OvenCustomer Review: Great item-- LOVE the Logic finish. Worth the extra money. Summary: 5 Stars
If you're reading this, you probably already know about camp dutch ovens. I've been a Boy Scout my whole life, and a Scoutmaster and adult leader for several years now... (and an avid camper and outdoor cook to boot.) I have owned 5 or 6 dutch ovens in my life, and I'm now convinced that there is no match for the quality of LODGE dutch ovens. They are worth paying a little extra for. The others aren't really worth buying-- the cheaper ones don't keep a finish like the LODGE ovens do.
I've bought the original finish and now this one with the LOGIC factory forged finish. I LOVE the pre-seasoned cookware. It isn't the finish that you'll get after years of seasoning, cooking and taking care of an oven, BUT you'll love that you will be able to cook on this oven RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. So, if you're into instant gratification (with no downside-- they season perfectly as you use them) this is the oven choice for you.
Customer Review: Great, great, great! Summary: 5 Stars
What else can I say. If you take care of it, this dutch oven will last generations. The iron is smooth (no sharp, bumpy finish like cheaper ovens). Plus it's made in the USA! Perfect for camping. The legs on the botton and lip on the lid allow you to place charcoals under and over for outdoor cooking. Anything you can cook in the oven at home can be cooked in a dutch oven. Pot Roast, lasagna, corn bread, cakes, cobblers, chili. We also use it for frying and browning (bacon, ground meat, etc. The lid is reversible and can act as a small skillet as well. Note that this is the deep version of the 12" oven. We also have a 6 quart (shallow) version. I would recommend this one, as you have more room to play with. I sue this one for the main course, and the shallow 6-quart for desert and bread. I have a 10" that I use for keeping things warm.
Customer Review: Great for Bread Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great tool for baking European style crusty bread! Best bread I ever made. Saw the recipe in Mother Earth News: 3 cups bread flour, 1/4 tsp dry yeast, 1 1/2 tsp salt, and 1 1/2 cups water. Dissolve yeast in water. Mix ingredients in mixing bowl, but don't knead. Cover with wrap and let it rise 12-18 hours til dotted on top with bubbles. Roll dough into ball and set seam side down on dish cloth heavily coated with flour and corn meal. Let dough rise til double. About 20 minutes before dough is ready, put Lodge Dutch Oven, lid and all, into your oven and set temp to 450. After 20 min without burning yourself, put dough, seam side up into kettle and cover. Return to oven and cook for 30 minutes with lid on. Then remove lid and continue baking til it browns up and sounds hollow when tapped. Remove and let cool.
Customer Review: Great Dutch Oven for Camping! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this dutch oven right before a camping trip with a group of 15 of my friends (all male). After reading the reviews, this seemed to be the brand to go with. They were right! The oven cooked quickly and evenly for both the breakfast and dinner that I made. The ridged lid made it easily to put charcoal on the top, and the oven was a cinch to clean.
The only reservations I had when purchasing this oven was the size. I know that I wanted an oven that would cook food for at least 15 people. It turned out that this oven has the right amount of volume for a stew for 15 men. In hindsight, I would probably buy one a bit bigger, and then also buy one a bit smaller so I have two pots of different sizes. Still, this oven is great and definitely recommend a purchase!
Customer Review: American Iron Baby! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had these in use for a year now. I have the 8 quart deep and the 6 quart for camping.
These are fantastic for cooking at the campfire. I found they were the perfect thing for keeping the kids entertained at dusk in camp. Just fill them with pinapple upside down cake.
They take good even heat and I had no hot spot issues. I like that Lodge puts the oil treatment on the iron ware right from the factory. Gives a good base immediately.
Last year these were much cheaper than they are now. I'm glad I bought them when I did. I don't think I'd pay the current price but I do love the products.
