Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Logic 4-Quart Cast-Iron Camp Dutch OvenCustomer Review: Cookware you have a relationship with. Summary: 5 Stars
People seem to either love, hate, or have total disinterest in cast iron cookware. I love it. It seems to have a lot more soul than "modern" utensils.
I've been reading "Little House on the Prarie" to my daughter and she enjoyed hearing how the Ingalls used a pot just like daddy has.
This dutch oven is quite versitile. I can use it with campfire coals, with charcoal, over my Coleman campstove, or in the oven at home. The legs are too long to use on my rangetop at home (without risking damage to the range surface).
Dutch oven cooking is an acquired skill (on top of the general cast iron learning curve), but I've had no problems so far. I have mostly used it to make chicken or beef stew when camping.
Once you get hooked on dutch ovens, then you start wanting accessories. I use a charcoal chimney to start the coals, a pair of metal tongs to move the coals around, and a metal oil drain pan to contain the coals. I've just ordered a Lodge lid lifter, lid rack, and leather gloves to make the whole process a bit easier and safer.
I'm also already thinking of my next dutch oven. It will be the "deep" 8 quart. The 4 quart being reviewed here is 10" diameter at the lid and 3-1/2" deep. The "deep" 8 quart is 12" at the lid and 5" deep. (The standard depth 12" oven is 6 quarts, the standard depth 8 quart is 14" diameter). For soup or stew I like to leave some space below the rim so I probably only get 3 quarts in the 4 quart model, while the deeper 8 quart model would allow a greater percentage of the volume to be used. I imagine for bisquits or other baked goods the standard depth is probably fine.
Customer Review: Completely impressed Summary: 5 Stars
Even though this is a camp dutch oven, I couldn't wait to use it and so tried it in my regular kitchen oven. We live in the COLD northeast and I just didn't feel like braving the elements....
It was easy to put in the regular oven. Just put the feet right through your rack. It sat there very sturdy.
Terrific results! I used a recipe that came in the recipe book that was included. Chicken and rice. My whole family loved it.
The DO was easy to clean. I just rinsed it in hot water with minimal scrubbing. Dried with a towel, and set it in my still warm oven to make sure it was competely dry. After about 20 minutes drying-time I wiped it with some Pam.
This size was perfect for my family of four. I originally wanted to get a 12" DO, because it seems that most recipes call for this size. Now I'm not sure I want to go any bigger (and heavier) for camping. I don't NEED the extra room for more food, and you can't easily store leftovers while camping. If my family was larger, or I had two teenage boys instead of 2 little girls the 12" would probably be appropriate.....
However....I loved this DO so much, I'll probably eventually get the 12" so that I can use two at a time. Main meal in one...dessert in another....
This is the third Lodge cast iron piece I have tried in the last week and I have to say that I am completely impressed. I wish I would have discovered cast iron sooner.
Looking forward to using it tent camping this summer.
Customer Review: Lodge Quality, Worth the Price Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this Lodge 4qt Camp Dutch Oven with two things in mind. First I've wanted to try and make busciuts in a camp dutch oven ever since I watched the movie "Lonesome Dove", and saw Gus cooking busciuts in a dutch oven in a campfire. Well this last weekend I finally did it. But I did it with briquettes, 2/3 on the top and 1/3 bottom, not a campfire. It was fairly easy, and the biscuits came out wonderful. Second, I intend to try and make peach cobbler. I waiting to get some fresh peaches before attemting the cobbler. I own a larger 8qt deep dutch oven for stews, ribs, roast, etc., but the 4qt is a good size for buscuits and the cobblers. There are tons of recipies on the internet. So I say go buy a Lodge dutch oven, find some recipes you might like and start cooking outdoors. Listen to the birds chirp, feel the sun, breath the air, then eat really well. There will be some trial and error involved, but it's totally fun to learn a new way to cook!
Customer Review: Great addition for the dutch oven cook Summary: 5 Stars
I never write reviews but this dutch oven deserves one. I really love the lodge logic. I have two dutch ovens I seasoned myself and two lodge logic. The preseasoning looks great and wears great, very much worth it. I bought this little dutch oven because I had been introduced to dutch oven cooking and was having a blast with it and felt this would be a nice little oven to use once in a while. I've actually used it all most as much as my twelve incher. It works great for the sides, breads, deserts, etc. The smaller size makes it lighter which is kind of nice also. It keeps my house cool in the summer when I want a bread for dinner but don't want to heat the oven and tonight I had friends over and made an apple crisp by layering the ingredients inside, then stacking it on top of my twelve incher where our dinner was going. Now I'm trying to think of what other things I can do. This is definitely a worthwhile investment.
Customer Review: nice quality, not fully seasoned Summary: 4 Stars
I ignored the previous review that recommended scrubbing this and seasoning it yourself, and that decision quickly proved unwise. The day I bought it I made easy cobbler from the great book that is included. The book said to spray some cooking spray on it and heat it up before use, which I did. Unfortunately, the cobbler, which was indeed very easy and good, absolutely fused to the dutch oven. It was the by far the hardest cleaning job I have ever had to do. I scrubbed for hours, and will reseason it. This is a very nice heavy weight dutch oven, the included book is very nice, the price was great. Still it will take me a long time to get over the tremendous cleaning job I had to go through. Buy this, but scrub it and reseason first.
