Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Logic 12-Inch Iron CoverCustomer Review: Who would have thought that you'd be buying a cast iron lid? Summary: 5 Stars
There are times when you wonder if your cooking avocation is getting a bit out of hand, when you spend money to buy...The Lodge 12-inch iron cover fits this category.
The cover is well made, being of the same thickness as the Lodge pans that it fits. This lid fits a Lodge 12-inch skillet, Lodge 7-qt. dutch oven and Lodge 5-qt. chicken fryer or deep skillet as it's sometimes called.
Lodge manufactures a 12-inch glass cover which has the benefit of you being able to see the cooking food in the pan. The benefit of buying cast iron cover is that the tight fit and substantial weight garantees that your 12-inch skillet becomes the perfect braiser.
If you already own a Lodge 7-qt dutch oven, you already own this cover. Like other posters have mentioned, if your planning on buying the 7-qt dutch oven (L10DO3), it may be more cost effective for you to buy this lid as part of that purchase.
Like all uncoated cast iron cookware, this needs to be dried thoroughly and occasionally wiped with a light coat of oil. My recommendation is to season this lid a few times (google seasoning cast iron)in addition to Lodge's initial seasoning.
Customer Review: A long time fan of cast iron Summary: 4 Stars
As with all of our Lodge cast iron, the quality of this lid is excellent. There are no rough edges. It is solid and weighty. It fits perfectly on our Lodge 12 inch skillet. Seasoning is extremely simple - wipe on some oil and bake in the oven for awhile - so we have no preference for the pre-seasoning, but some may find it to be a plus.
The underside includes pointed spikes that might have been inspired from a medieval weapon, but I suppose that's where the self-basting comes from -- moisture condensing on the lid will rain evenly back into the pan. While the spikes probably contribute much to the quality of cooking (which is the point after all), they make it somewhat uncomfortable to wash and dry. Still, we're not giving ours back. (As of this writing, the photo of the "Lodge 5-Quart Cast Iron Dutch Oven with Iron Lid" will give you an idea of what the bottom of this lid looks like.)
Customer Review: Lid is more expensive than the frying pan Summary: 4 Stars
First of all let me say that I only use cast iron and stainless steel cookware. I don't use aluminum (brain damage) or non-stick (carcinogenic) cookware ever. Cast iron cookware takes years to season because it has to smooth out from use and the deposit of microscopic carbon molecules. Because of that pre-seasoning is kind-of useless. I think every cook should have 3 pieces of cast iron: A grill pan, a dutch oven (a 7 quart lid fits a 12" fry pan) and a 12" frying pan. If you can't cook it in one of those, it probably can't be cooked.
As far as the lid goes; it fits tightly on the Lodge Logic 12" frying pan. I wouldn't say it's an essential item (especially if you have a 7 quart dutch oven) but it's nice to have. I think the price is too high considering that the frying pan (with more metal) is about 1/3 less expensive. This lid was $10 in 2007. Hmm....
Customer Review: Heavy, tight lid Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this lid a few weeks ago. It is great. It is really heavy, which I love. The little torture devices on the inside keep everything you're cooking nice and warm. It is a wonderful lid. You do need to season it yourself, though. The factory seasoning just wasn't enough. It is very easy to do, though. Just rub some vegetable oil all over, heat your oven to below its smoking point (like 300 degrees works), and bake it upside down for an hour or two. Repeat this a few times and it is perfect. It takes one day (less, really) and you should be golden for a long time.
NEVER USE SOAP. Clean the thing with coarse salt, use water if you really have to (you almost never have to, salt should do the job. Just use some muscle). Make sure to rub some oil into the lid after each use, you don't want it to rust!
Customer Review: I love this lid! Summary: 5 Stars
This lid makes my Lodge Logic L10SK3 12-Inch Pre-Seasoned Skillet, my most useful pan, even more versatile. I didn't think I would use this lid very much, but find myself using it quite often to help keeping cooked food warm (without drying it out), and to wilt spinach and other greens that I add toward the end of cooking onions, celery, and carrots, and so on.
The lid fits tightly over the skillet, an no noticeable moisture is lost when using it. The spikes on the inside redistribute moisture inside the pan, and work very well. With normal use, I find that little maintenance is necessary; the inside of the lid gets wet, but I just let it dry out while it is still hot. I highly recommend this lid.
