Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Color Dutch Oven, Island Spice Red, 6-QuartCustomer Review: What a great pot! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this 6-Quart Dutch Oven and used it the day it came. I haven't made too many things in it, but what I made was WONDERFUL. I have one of those EXTREMELY expensive ones, and almost bought one of them this time around. But after reading the reviews, I decided to save lots of money and buy this pot. I'm not sorry.
What do I love? The edges, which are black, are not just the iron showing through. There is a special edging, and it's really easy to clean.
The inside is white, easy to see, and even easier to clean.
I browned onions in it, then cooked other veggies, and it cleaned up better than Teflon!
There are little rubber thingies that hold the lid when you store the pot, so nothing rubs, scratches, etc.
It's a great size for a lot of veggies, and they can simmer away, tasting better and better and you can just wipe up the pot afterwards.
Don't waste hundreds of dollars on the fancy one - this is fine. And I didn't feel that I was settling for something less. It's really a great pot, and looks beautiful!
Be careful, it's VERY heavy, and even heavier filled with food.
Customer Review: Good product Summary: 5 Stars
We ordered this Dutch Oven with some apprehension after reading some of the other reviews that noted the relatively loose fitting cover that allowed steam to escape. We have not found this to be the case at all. As suggested by another reviewer, we ordered a metal replacement knob for the lid Le Creuset L9403-45 Stainless-Steel 2-Inch Replacement Knob so we don't have to worry about the temperature at which we cook with this Durch Oven for recipes calling for putting it in our stove. Clean up is easy. We are enjoying some of our old recipes. I was unprepared for how heavy it was and lost my grip on the lid while stirring slow cooking chili on our first use of the Dutch Oven - this resulted in a couple of small chips along the exterior of the bottom piece. When I contacted Lodge customer service, they recommended exactly what I had done after that mishap: coating the chipped areas with a light coating of oil when storing it so the cast iron showing through the enamel will not rust. Seems to be working so far.
Customer Review: Too good to be true Summary: 1 Stars
I need to sadly join the other reviewers on this page who have had the enamel on their Lodge Enameled Dutch Oven chip. I was extremely excited to buy this piece and treated it extremely carefully - always hand-washing, used wooden spoons, etc. They're certainly beautiful and retain heat especially well (I don't understand where the misconception came about that they conduct heat really well - heat conduction is actually quite poor in cast iron - have you ever tried to cook a frittata on the stovetop only to have the bottom burn immediately above the heating element while the edges remain runny? That's just a side note, though, and characteristic of all cast iron, including Le Creuset).
My dutch oven chipped when I placed it empty into a cold oven and slowly raised the temperature to 400F. Upon removing it from the oven and removing the lid I saw, much to my dismay, a large hole in the enamel on the cooking surface. Sad! Thankfully I bought it from a small local retailer (not Amazon) who will accept the return. I won't be buying it again - I'll wait until I can afford a Le Creuset.
Customer Review: great addition to our kitchen Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this dutch oven a few weeks ago, and have used it several times. Just love it. Heavy-duty, nice finish inside and out, and cooks like a charm. No complaints.
We've used it to sear meats, stir-fry, and create stews. Worked great every time. It cooks very evenly. Haven't used it in the oven yet, but am looking forward to making my favorite chicken dish.
Easy to clean, and it looks great sitting on my stove-top. Had several compliments just on the style, from people walking into out kitchen. They all ask; where'd you get that great dutch oven?
UPDATE - 01-20-09: The other day while heating some EVO on low (gas heat), we heard a strange pop and lo and behold, a quarter-sized piece of enamel had popped off. Oh dear. However, I emailed the company right away, and within a couple days (they requested a photo), they notified me they were shipping a replacement.
I am very happy with customer service, and can't wait to start cooking with one of my most favorite pots.
Customer Review: An Extra Care Tip Summary: 5 Stars
Received yesterday and put right to work. A three pound chicken fit with lots of room to spare. We followed Julia Child's recipe from MASTERING THE ART OF FRENCH COOKING, meaning we had a wonderfully moist and tender bird in 75 minutes. My wife thinks it was better than the rotisserie chicken we get at the supermarket, and I agree.
Extra care tip: The included care booklet is essential reading, but it misses an important tip. DO NOT pour cold liquid into a hot pot! Many recipes call for sauteing or searing directly in the pot before putting it in the oven. Be careful NOT to put cold wine or sherry out of the fridge into the pot at this point, as you will hear the enamel freaking out. Long term this will lead to easier chipping and cracking. Of course you wouldn't want to put the hot pot under cold tap water either.
When you do use wine, etc., just warm it up in the microwave first.
Final word, a thanks to Amazon for excellent protective packing!
Bon appetit!
