Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Color 6-Quart Dutch Oven, Island Spice RedCustomer Review: Great dutch oven and great customer service! Summary: 5 Stars
I got the lodge 6-quart dutch oven for Christmas, but unfortunately it arrived damaged. I called lodge and they sent me a paid-postage label to send it back to them. Just a couple weeks later and I had a replacement at my doorstep. It is not the same color (I had green, and they sent me red) but they told me there was no guarantee on getting my original color. I don't mind the red instead, I am fine with any color because this is a fantastic pot!
I have used it at least once or twice a week since getting it and it has been a dream. My recipes are turning out fantastic, and I think it is because this dutch oven holds the heat so well. I have tried so many new recipes, and I am going to try more and more. The pot is easy to clean, and is so attractive. It is very heavy, but still easy to manage because the handles are a good size for large or small hands. I'm in love with this dutch oven!
Customer Review: Lodge Logic EC6D43 6-Quart Dutch Oven Summary: 5 Stars
I'm very pleased with this product. I use it for popcorn, deep fried fish, chili, spaghetti sauce etc. It's great for tomato based recipes, unlike cast iron, because you don't have to worry about the destruction of the seasoning that protects the iron from rust. I don't know if people aren't heeding the warning that comes with the pot (Don't heat too quickly; start with medium heat, don't put in dishwasher, use wooden spoon or plastic spatula), and therefore having the rust, cracking and chipping issues, or just unlucky and getting a rare but badly made pot. Also common sense that if you shouldn't heat too quickly don't cool down too quickly either. I let mine cool completely before cleaning it, and it's still very easy to clean with just soap and water and a sponge. If you have need for more scrubbing power use baking soda. I ordered another one in the casserole size.
Customer Review: lodge is no le creuset - evaluated for a year before writing this review Summary: 2 Stars
I can't say I enjoyed this product, which I finally threw out. Thin cast iron, means burned food (a lot!), it stained horribly, the enamel chipped off the outside around the edges of the pan and the lid, and ultimately it was more trouble than it was worth. Finally a badly burned interior meant the enamel came off before the burned substance.
In contrast to my le creuset pan (admittedly smaller), that never burns, never stains, never chips...
Yes cheaper, but you get what you pay for. Interesting experiment, I won't buy one of the lodge enamelled products again, though.
FOLLOWUP: Tramontina has a lovely alternative (which is holding up much better than the Lodge, after about 4 months of use) - similar to Le Creuset except much heavier. You might want to check out my evaluation on that product here on Amazon.
Customer Review: Cooks (and looks) beautifully! Summary: 5 Stars
I received this dutch oven for Christmas and it's just beautiful! The outside color is a dark red on the bottom, almost maroon, and lightens to a cherry red at the top. Inside is an off white/creamy color that gives the impression of being well-used and faded (so I'm not so worried about staining). I've used it several times (juiciest pot roast I've ever made and red beans and rice) and it conducts and holds heat fantastically, cleans up beautifully (dishwasher) and though it's not non-stick anything that gets stuck to the bottom lifts off really easily. It's heavy, but it's supposed to be. The handles are also cast-iron and though they warm they don't get too hot while cooking (nice, since I get distracted and tend to forget pot holders).
It's already a very valued item in my kitchen that I highly recommend to others!
Customer Review: My favorite large quantity cookware Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my favorite pieces of kitchen cookware. I purchased it to make coq au vin (French: Chicken with wine) and soon learned that the cast iron enameled dutch oven can be used for cooking more than just French food. I have made vegetarian Indian dishes with this oven and they came out tasting better than ever. I even experimented with it recently when I purchased a 5 lb Chicken and let it slow cook, covered in the oven @ 250 degrees for most of the day. The result was extremely tender and flavorful, melt off the bone chicken. By the way, some of the photos (including mine with the roasted chicken) make it seem as though the dutch oven stains get baked on... they do NOT. The enamel made it easy to wipe clean with warm water soap and a sponge. I plan on purchasing more of these in the future to cook multiple items at one time.
