Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Color 6-Quart Dutch Oven, Island Spice RedCustomer Review: Beautiful, but you should be aware of some shortcomings Summary: 3 Stars
I love this dutch oven, and I'm sure the other 100 reviews can give you the pros (like how it's safe for glass cooktops), but you should be aware of some of the shortcomings:
- The instruction manual that it comes with specifically states:
"There's NO exposed cast iron, even the matte black surfaces are porcelain. No seasoning required."
While the exterior and interior are enameled, there is a non-enameled portion located at the rim of both the pot and the lid. It has a matte black finish that makes you think the enameling process ended there, but according to Lodge it's also enameled. Enamel has a shiny gloss to it, so when it didn't shine, the skeptic in me wondered if their claims were true.
Sure enough, after just the first use, I started to see some discoloration around the rim. I thought I must not have noticed it the first time, and that maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me. I took note of the colors and made sure I had a point of reference if it changed again. After the second time, there it was, but even larger - the telltale signs of reddish/orange rust, right along the rims of both the pot and the lid. The rust had started to 'seep' underneath the white enamel.
Horrified, I did some research on the web and found a simple way to remove the rust: rub it with salt and vegetable oil (I used olive oil). I couldn't believe my eyes when rubbing it with this solution took the stains out. Even the rust underneath the white enamel vanished.
After being chastened with this experience, I have taken preventive measures by seasoning the rims: apply a thin coat of oil and let it bake on low temperature to let the moisture evaporate and seal in the oil.
One other thing, for those concerned about the lead content. I did some homework for you and asked the company myself by sending this email:
"Do the Lodge Enameled Dutch Ovens have lead in their coatings/enamel/paints? I am specifically inquiring about the EXACT lead levels in the interior and exterior, and how this compares to regulatory levels. I'd like to buy a set but heard these are made in China, and as many people have unfortunately found out, Chinese-made products have posed serious health risks. Thank you for your time."
Their response:
"Are Lodge Enamel products tested for lead safety?
Lodge utilizes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Test Procedure 7.5.1.4a Leachability of Lead and Cadmium for Glazed Ceramic Surfaces. The FDA Division of Compliance Programs uses ASTM-C738 as the Standard Method of Test for glazed ceramic. In addition to information provided by vendors, Lodge Manufacturing Company uses third party testing to ensure that products with the Lodge name comply with standards set forth by the United States Food & Drug Administration. All our domestic as well as imported cookware complies with the FDA Standards. We are also in compliance with California Proposal 65, the world's most rigid standard for lead and cadmium content."
Hope that sets your minds at ease regarding the lead content.
Enjoy the dutch oven, but be aware that it's not as advertised.
Description of Lodge Color 6-Quart Dutch Oven, Island Spice RedThis 6 Qt enamel Dutch oven is great for cooking, marinating, refrigeration and freezing. The color porcelain enamel on cast iron can be used on gas, electric, ceramic and induction cooktops, as well as in the oven. Not recommended for use on outdoor grills or over open outdoor flames. Not for use in microwaves. Lodge Color Porcelain Enamel on Cast Iron cookware is cast from molten iron in individual sand molds. The porcelain surface eliminates the need to season cast iron. The cast iron vessel has superior heat distribution and retention, evenly heating bottom sidewalls and even the lid. Tightly fitting lid seals in moisture. The excellent heat retention reduces the amount of energy needed for cooking. Two layers of very hard, glossy porcelain enamel are chip resistant and easy to clean. Lid knob is oven safe to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The black rim on the pot is matte porcelain, not exposed cast iron. Hygienic porcelain enamel is non-reactive with food. Although dishwasher safe, hand washing with warm soapy water is recommended to preserve the cookware's original appearance. 10 3/4" diameter, 4 1/2" deep. Island Spice Lodge Color is one of the newest lines from this respected American cast iron cookware company. Traditionally shaped and more affordable than some European brands, Lodge Color enameled cast iron is just as durable, requires no seasoning, and attractively serves at the table. Lodge infuses this 6-quart Dutch oven with two coats of hard-as-nails porcelain enamel, in a choice of several bright colors that are gradated (dark to light) on the exterior, and which are nicely set off by a cream interior. Embellished with concentric circles and a black knob, the lid, which also fits the Lodge Color 11-inch skillet, is oven-safe to 400 degrees F, so you can start a stew or casserole on the stovetop and finish by baking it in the oven. The 6-quart Dutch oven measures 10-3/4 inches in diameter and 5 inches deep. Lodge enameled cast iron makes a smart choice due to its versatility-you can marinate raw meats in it, since it won't absorb odors or flavors, and you can braise, sauté, simmer, and bake in it. Made in China to Lodge's meticulous specifications, each cookware item is first clad in matte black enamel before the color is added. The black rim that shows on the oven is actually the scratch-resistant matte enamel, not the raw cast iron. Though the Dutch oven is dishwasher-safe, washing by hand is recommended to best preserve the glossy finish. Look also for the pricier Lodge Enamel series, with its unique L-shaped lid knob, in a different set of colors and sizes to suit any kitchen. All Lodge enameled ware is covered by a lifetime warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri
