The clamp style has the problem of accidental early release. Even if you let your grip loosen a little bit the lid will jerk or slip resulting in ash in the food or a dropped lid. This style of lifter works better for me. It feels more natural. actually the problem with ash should be a non-issue with either lifter. Anyone who does a lot of camp dutch oven cooking owns a small whisk broom to take care of the ash before lifting the lid. Now that we are on the subject of ash in your food I thought I would mention dirt in the food. If you do not own the "Cast Iron Dutch Oven Folding Lid Holder Stand" you will have to come up with a solution to keep the earth from entering your food. In the past I have place the lid on a Newspaper, Coffee can, Whisk broom, picnic table, camp chair, hood of car, fire ring, shirt and have propped it up against trees thinking to my self there has got to be a better way. Alas the Dutch Oven Folding Lid Holder Stand! It's less than 10 buc ks here on amazon (12 at cabela's) and is the best cast iron addition I own.
Back to the item at hand. It works great! It also makes a great fire poker!

They could give away dutch ovens if everyone would promise to buy all the accessories. At first I made do with a hooked piece of wire but after dropping ashes in the pot and almost burning myself a few times I got the lid lifter. It's actually quite useful.
You can leave it on the lid and it stays in place. The handle is long enough that the heat doesn't seem to travel up and make it too hot to hold. The "wings" adjacent to the hook brace on the lid so when you pick the lid up it doesn't wobble or tilt (which is when the ashes would drop on your food!).
The hook also works well to grab the scalding hot bail of the Dutch Oven to carry or reposition the whole oven. For even cooking the standard practice is to rotate the oven one way and the lid the other way every once in a while- that way any hot spots from the coals will spread around. This tool lets you safely do both. Also you don't really have to lift the lid to rotate it- which would let heat out.

This Item and a 'Lid Stand' was scheduled to arrive the 28th.
Today (Oct 26th) the sun was brite and air was brisk. Good combination for a cook-out for suppertime. Sometime after 6 pm., around the campfire the stew was simmering, and the cornbread was baking in the Dutch Oven. I said to my wife - "Mom; we could sure use that 'Lid Lifter' in a few minutes to check our cornbread". I'm not kiddin. It wasn't five minutes later that our son pulls up on his 4-wheeler and says- " This package was stuck in your screen door ". Lo and behold it was the Lodge Lid Lifter.
I unboxed both items totally elated with excitement, lifted the Oven Lid laden with hot coals off the Dutch Oven, and placed it on the 'Lid Stand'. Looked at the Wife and said - "Can you believe this"? Thanks Amazon. That was great timeing.

I have done a lot of camp oven cooking over the years and the Lodge Oven Lid Lifter is the Rolls Royce of oven handling tools at a Volkswagon price. The handle is long enough that you are never in danger of burning yourself on the hot lid or coals placed on a lid. It is well-made, like all of the Lodge products. The Lodge lid lifter is a fine blend of utility and visually pleasing design in a tool. These one-piece lid lifters are prone to dumping ash in the food. They're better than nothing, but don't grip the lid tighly.
They don't grip the lid firmly like the good lifters (with the three legs and the hook operated by gripping the handle). The good lid lifters retail for about the same price as this lifter. There's no reason to buy this design. They will will put a huge smile on your face the first time you discover you don't have to do any kind of balancing act.
I've been looking on Amazon, but for some odd reason it looks like they don't carry the good lid lifters, which are available at any outdoors store that carries dutch ovens. Please Amazon, offer the three-leg+hook lifters, sometimes called "deluxe" lifters!
