Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of LightWedge Original LED Book LightCustomer Review: It works. Summary: 3 Stars
Let me preface this by saying that this does what it's supposed to do, in that if I turn off the lights, and turn on the LightWedge, I can read what's on the page.
However it's by no means as wonderful as the advertising makes it out to be. Frankly, it's not that bright. It's not so much a glowing page you're reading, as a sort of unevenly lit pair of LEDs at the side of your page (and then the reflection of said LEDs off the opposite page). The glass has the effect of lighting the margins of the page better than the center, which would be useful if they put the text in the margins and left the center of the page blank.
The product image shows a beautifully lit page glowing like a laptop screen. This is by no means the case. I'm not sure that it's worse on the eyes than a more traditional booklight, but it's definitely worse than having a table-lamp on. Maybe I was expecting too much.
Given its price in comparison to other booklights, I expected more. Still, I can read text through it, and I do like that it's not very heavy and serves as a sort of giant bookmark, so ... 3 stars it is.
Customer Review: OK for me Summary: 4 Stars
I rated this as a 4 from my perspective and experience. Not everyone may feel this positive.
The light may not directly shine into someone else's eyes, but one has to move the wedge away from the book and then back again on the next page. Inevitably this movement of pages is going to make some noise. This noise may either wake up someone or keep them awake. I use the wedge primarily when I experience insomnia and go to another room to read during the night.
The light provides plenty of illumination for me to read. However, I am one of the few people over 70 years old who does not require so-called reading glasses to read. So I am able to hold the book quite close to my eyes and there is no loss of illumination because of distance. Those who are far-sighted may have a different experience.
Yes, the device is easily scratched, but I did not find those scratches evident when I placed the wedge against the pages of a book.
The batteries do last for quite a while and I have not found them difficult to install.
I am quite happy with the device.
Customer Review: A really good choice Summary: 5 Stars
Having spent more money than I care to think about on various types of book lights that basically sucked, I was not really wanting to spend even more on yet another one that I might not like. I bought this one using gift certificates, and after using it, realized I would have been happy spending the real cash on it. Yes, it can get a little scratched if you're not careful and mine has a few but they really are not a problem. It's bright enough that instead of flipping it back and forth to each page, I simply flip the edge up a little to illuminate the page the light is not sitting on. This is the ONLY light I've had that does not bother my husband while he's trying to sleep and I still want to read, so it's been worth it just for that. I get alot of use out of a set of batteries but I don't read for hours with it every night. I think if you do use it like that, rechargeables would be the way to go. As it is, I have had mine for 3 and a half months and have not changed batteries yet. I use it several times a week for anywhere from a half hour to an hour at a time. Definitely get the case to keep it in.
Customer Review: Everyone wants one! Summary: 5 Stars
We first purchased the Lightwedge Original about three years ago, are still using it nightly, and have since purchased another one for ourselves (my husband and I kept fighting over it). Because we are so pleased with the high quality of this product and the light with which it illuminates our books, we have also purchased the paperback-sized edition. To be honest, we have never used the lens care kit (we have not bought one yet), nor have we needed to - we just keep them in their cases or right in our current book when not using them. The first one we purchased is still providing the clean, clear light it did three years ago for reading in bed or in the car. We take them wherever we go (when we are travelling, we don't even bring the soft covers, because we just store them in the current book we are reading) and every friend and relative we visit wants one! Thus, we give them frequently as "thank-you for having us" gifts as well as Christmas and birthday gifts. And as I said before, everyone loves them!
Customer Review: Not a good deal from Amazon Summary: 2 Stars
I was very happy to find a Light Wedge at Amazon at a discounted price, but when it arrived the acrylic panel had numerous fine scratches on it and some larger deeper scratches as well. Scratches light up brightly when the wedge is illuminated, and are as annoying as trying to read through scratched eyeglasses. Clearly the product had been used or shopworn, although Amazon claimed it was 'new'. When I tried to return it, Amazon told me that they could not replace it with a new one because they were out of stock. So beware.
When a light wedge is in good condition, it is a very pleasant book light, much less annoying than ordinary lights to others in a room or beside you on an airplane. They are a little heavy if you have to support the weight of your book while reading. And, the acrylic lens is easily scratched, so a protective case is probably a good idea for the times when your wedge is not stuffed in a book.
