Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of LightWedge Original LED Book Light, Black

Customer Review: BEST for reading at night, no question about it!
Summary: 5 Stars

THis lightwedge is fantastic. It provides a great source of light that is focused on your book, not on the person next to you. The light comes from the black handle, but because of the "wedge" shape of the glass, it is focused down the glass and onto your book. You can even take that focused beam and use it as an impromtu flashlight.

This thing uses hardly any batteries at all, unlike the other popular reading lights. I very rarely have to change the batteries and I use this all the time, for hours every night! I've even fallen asleep with it on overnight, with no noticable decrease in battery life. Because the battery life is so good, I've even let my son read in bed for awhile and then just set it down and use it as a nightlight for the rest of the night.

It is true that if you're like I am (rough with it) it will get scratches on the lens. Not a big deal though, when it's on the book, you won't notice the scraches. Much like small scratches on eyeglasses.

I like the larger size because you can use that with large books or with paperbacks with equal ease. The paperback one doesn't work as well with the hardcover books, but it's okay.

The lightwedge also doubles as a bookmark when not in use!

You won't be disappointed if you buy this. I wasn't. I'm actually buying two more for friends as Christmas gifts!

Customer Review: Don't Buy
Summary: 1 Stars

I'm surprised this has a 3.5 star rating, as this product just isn't good. It doesn't produce much light. It's definitely not enough that you can use it to read in the dark, and used in even a moderately well-lit room you'll notice no difference. I found that I kept taking it away and putting it back just to see if there was any difference at all, or if it just looked different due to the glare from the lens. I think it's the latter, and you'd get the same glare (if for some reason you wanted that) from any piece of Plexiglas.

What little it does produce is distributed around the edges of the lens, with the middle being nearly dark. It's supposed to be full-sized, but I find it's still too small for some hardcover books, which is annoying since they opted to put useless little guides on the top and bottom that, for all I can tell, serve no purpose but to annoy you if the book is taller than the lens.

The construction quality appears to be shoddy. The lens has a little wiggle to it where it connects to the handle, and if it's not at the perfect angle the light becomes even dimmer or goes off entirely.

The battery life is great, but then it doesn't really provide any light at all, so why shouldn't it be? You can just take the battery out and it won't make a difference.

Customer Review: Poorly packaged or poorly made?
Summary: 3 Stars

Overall, I like the concept of the LightWedge. I usually wake up before dawn, so having this allows me to read without disturbing my wife with a traditional clip on light. That being said, I am very disappointed in the company's packaging. After opening my first LightWedge, I discovered 3 approximately 1 inch scratches and hundreds of smaller scratches on the lens. I went back to check my order to be sure that I didn't accidentally order a used one. Nope! Supposedly brand new. Needless to say, I contacted Amazon about it and requested a replacement. They promptly sent me a replacement that arrived today. I opened the package and was disappointed to find that this replacement was even worse than the first one! The whole surface was scuffed and scratched! The soft plastic lens requires WAY more protection than the flimsy, one sided holder that it is shipped in. If it were made of real glass, then the package would be fine. It would be nice if it were constructed of stronger plastic or glass. Anyway, I ended up returning the second LightWedge since it was the worse of the two and will just live with the scratches and hope that I don't add any more.

Customer Review: Disappointed with product and LightWedge customer service
Summary: 1 Stars

I received this product as a gift. My daughter purchased it directly from the LightWedge website, not Amazon, based only on the product description since obviously online purchases cannot be tried out ahead of time. I found the product to give unsatisfactory lighting and caused eye fatigue unless supplemented with overhead or table lights, therefore could not be used in bed or in a room where others wanted low lighting to watch TV. When I contacted LightWedge customer service about returning the item because it did not perform as described they refused to authorize the return because the product was not deemed defective. Apparently they do not consider customer satisfaction with their products to be a priority. I highly caution anyone to do business with this company. It seems once they have your $50.00 their relationship with their customers is over. Not a good policy for an online business! (P.S. The soft acrylic-like surface is also very soft and displayed numerous hairline scratches after only three days of use.)

Customer Review: Not all it's cracked up to be
Summary: 2 Stars

I was very excited to get the LightWedge, having heard wonderful things about them, and having been frustrated with small, flimsy book lights that only light up parts of the page.

Well, it turns out it is no better than any other light, in fact it is worse. There are only two LED's at the top of the "wedge" and at the bottom. The light emitted seems to be quite a bit, but once it is placed on a page, it is very dim light. I found myself giving up on reading late at night because of constant squinting. It was horrible. I ended up pointing the end of the lightwedge at the text that I was reading instead of laying it down on the page so I could actually read the text without killing my eyes.

To make this a better product there needs to be an equal distribution of light over the page, maybe the addition of two more LED's would solve this problem.

If you want to have a good amount of reading light in complete darkness, shy away from the ligth wedge.
