Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lello 4070 Gelato JuniorCustomer Review: My new BEST toy!! One hell of a great investment and a lot of fun too! I LOVE MY LELLO! Summary: 5 Stars
I had considered buying one of the cheaper mechanical ice and salt machines until I spoke to an owner of one. That put me off from getting a Cuisinart (frozen container) or hand crank or mechanical ice/salt machines. Lo and behold I found this machine but was initially put off by the price. Well, you get what you pay for, I guess. I'm so glad I bought this machine. I look forward to trying new recipes (that I haven't already tried) with different fruits from all over. What helps is that there are tons of fresh local tropical fruits from around the world where I reside.
All you need is a good recipe (I ordered 3 good books before this came) and then the money you spent on this wonderful machine allows you to sit back and relax while it freezes and stirs the ice cream, gelato, granitas, custards, or sorbets, heck more if you have imagination. It only does one quart at a time but if you prepare several batches in advance and have the freezer space go ahead and freeze a lot (continuously) all at once like I do.
The machine is easy to use, easy to clean (as long as you aren't a pig), and is no noisier (maybe less) than a microwave oven. I've only owned this since the end of February and have gone nuts (to the delight of relatives and friends) making all kinds of new concoctions from the day after it arrived. Make sure you get yourself some good gelato, sorbet, ice cream recipe books. That's what's going to make or break your home product. Another thing to watch out for is condensation from the defrosting freezer unit. Make sure you get the water out of the base of the unit as it will collect if you don't pay attention to it. The drain hole is directly under the chill unit.
Don't forget to get the proper equipment to prepare your ice cream or sorbet or whatever creation. You'll need proper pots, thermometers, spoons, whisks, spatulas, strainers, zester, food processor, and whatever you need to make things easier and faster for preparing your mixture properly. The reason you have to worry about these is because the Lello takes care of everything else.
This unit can make no more than a quart at a time. Unfortunately if you want to make more with a self freezing mechanism it'll run you near $700.00 so this is the practical alternative. Who knows ... this could be my "gateway drug" that eventually causes me to buy one of the higher end machine.
As you can see this machine has sparked the creative side of me and has given me a lot of fun (and thanks) along the way. Everyone seems to like the almond float flavored ice cream the best so far. Don't forget to use Tupperware type containers for freezer storage. The thinner disposable plastic containers fracture and shatter when they are bumped while frozen.
About the unit.
It arrives packed well in a box sealed in another box that it fits perfectly in. The box arrived with a small dent but there was no problem at all with the unit. I'm guesstimating that this is 2 feet long by 1 foot wide and 1.5 feet tall. It weighs about 40 lbs so should be stored when not in use and not left on the counter. I've never used the slot to pour things in because I don't want to get the top dirty. The reason is that the cover is attached to the motor that turns the paddle. I have no idea if that part of the unit is powered by electricity or torque so I don't want to get the top dirty so I don't have to wash it much.
The paddle is inserted into the top portion of the cover and stirs the mixture for the time you desire. You can set the time for anything under 60 minutes. The paddle will stop if the ice cream or gelato freezes solid. The timer beeper is adequate but could be a tad louder.
Despite the fact I don't like the cover and how it connects to the paddle I have to honestly rate this item 5 stars. It comes with a 1 year warranty and hope I don't have to ever use it. I do use the machine twice weekly and it normally runs for at least 2.5 hours each time. I have not had problems with the freezing unit or the rest of the machine. I cannot recommend it highly enough for the creative soul who has a hankering for ice cream. This is one of my best buys on Amazon so far! I LOVE MY LELLO!!!!
We have not bought ice cream since I got this machine and now have friends at work offering to pay me to make a blend of ice cream for them. I swear .... this machine rocks.
Ah..I forgot to mention that this puppy even makes chilled soups!
