Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Le Creuset 7-Piece Spatula Set with Crock, RedCustomer Review: Worse than cheaper alternatives Summary: 2 Stars
I've had an equivalent set of Le Creseut spatulas for several years, in orange. I have thrown them out and replaced them with better, cheaper alternatives.
While the Le Creuset spatulas might have been nice 2 decades ago, now they offer no advantage.
PROBLEMS:
* The silicon is too soft. Only the small spoon-shaped one is ok. The others are all a bit too soft to be any real use for cooking or stirring anything other than something light like eggwhites. For example, try to scoop up some stew in the largest one, and the spoon will flop over, inverting.
* The silicon can discolor. If you leave the silicoln on the edge of a hot pan for a while, it can discolor.
* The wood is softer than typical hardwoods for a cheap wooden spoon. After using a spatula, typically you will whack it on the edge of a pot to shake off excess. This can be done hundreds of times with a wooden spoon. But with the Le Creusets, the wood is getting broken down and fuzzy and bits of wood fall into my food.
* The system of removable sticks is nonideal. The biggest problem is that in practice, you may not want to take apart your spatulas every time you clean. As a result, the wood can develop off smells. Further, over time, sometimes the head gets loose around the wood, making them prone to fall off.
All in all, there are plenty of high-temperature, one-piece spatulas available now which are a better buy, and which I have replaced my Le Creuset set with.
Happy spatula-ing!
Customer Review: Greatest Cooking Utensils Made! Summary: 5 Stars
Was that ecstatic enough for you? I LOVE these spatulas. I have 2 sets: 1 green and 1 red, because I keep kosher in my home.I originally bought two of these several years ago at a home show, and have been unable to find more until I ran across them here at Amazon.com. These are the best silicone spatulas made - they have the highest degree of heat-resistance (a couple of them up to 800 degrees!) over the [other] brands out there. Absolutely nothing sticks to them, they won't burn or melt (remember, when you have those rough, melted edges on your cooking utensils, YOU'RE EATING THAT STUFF!!!). I know they tell you to remove the heads to put them in the dishwasher, but frankly, I'm too lazy for that and always throw the whole things in. I've never had a problem with the heads or the wooden handles. The crocks are great, too. Nice and heavy so they stay put, and I've managed to put whisks, wooden spoons, nylon spoons, and 2 spiders into mine, ALONG WITH the spatulas! Really excellent product! ***Here we are, one year later, and you know what? These are still the most-used cooking utensils in my kitchen, for both cooking and baking. And I still throw them in the dishwasher, wooden handles and all - no stains, no splinters. I'm still delighted to give this product my highest recommendation, and I'm about to purchase 2 more sets as holiday gifts!***
Customer Review: Amazing! No more melted spatulas in your kitchen Summary: 5 Stars
I have a habit of using spatulas kind of like spoons when I am cooking. I leave them on the edge of the pan, stir, scrape, leave the kitchen, stir, scrape, you get the idea. Not only do these spatulas supremely scrape every last morsel out of your pan, bowl, whatever, they can be heated up to 800 degrees (or 1000 degrees for the newest ones- personally 800 degrees was just fine with me), so they are virtually indestructible - you would have to sit up nights thinking about ways to destroy them, they are that solid. I find that I use the little one the most - not the tiniest, which is good for scraping small things, but the next smallest, which I have found to be the most versatile. Mine met its end only because I accidentally threw it away with vegetable peelings - it has since been replaced. I also like the spoon spatula a lot since you really can use it like a spoon, it is sort of a spoon/spatula - the best of both. And, as I mentioned before, if you cook with nonstick pans and don't want to scratch them up, these spatulas make great stirrers - and they won't melt! A good investment in your kitchen.
Customer Review: You probably don't need all of these! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this set about three years ago and I simply would not cook without them. I am as enthusiastic as other reviewers who have given this set five stars, except that I only really use two out of the six pieces.
If I had to do it over, I would buy the very attractive pot and three each of the medium sized spoonula and the small spatula. I simply do not use the others. They are gathering dust as we speak.
Now if your cooking is a bit different than mine, you may have different needs, but I cook or bake four or five times a week, and I simply do not use 2/3 of this set. And, it is only the spoonula which gets used in high heat environments.
For room temperatures, I often find more use for a spatula which is a lot stiffer than these silicone plastics.
I recommend you find some way of buying only the pot and six of the medium spoonulas! Even these wear out from small nicks and cuts over time, and you do not want to find yourself without one at hand.
Customer Review: Best spatulas I've ever used Summary: 4 Stars
This is my first review, usually I read them but have never written one. I got my spatula set about 2 months ago and love it. I've even left it in the pan while I was browning ground beef and not the slightest mark to indicate so. I remember cooking with spatulas and the more I cooked with them the smaller and more bent up they got till I threw them out. Well, no more, I truly believe this will be the last set I will need to buy. The spatulas are made of quality material, I may not have tested them at the claimed 800 degrees but I have used them cooking up to 500 degrees and not a mark on them.
I would have given them 5 stars but I think the handle could be improved. The heads are great but the handles are just thin wood. I don't have fear of them breaking but I think it makes them look cheap.
Update: It's now 12/2009 and I still use these for my everyday cooking. 6 yrs later and they are still as good as new.
