Customer Review: a Y peeler with a nice bite on one edge . . .

When it comes to peelers, those with the typical regular straight blade, often slide off in use, particularly if the object is hard, smooth, slippery, or wet. A peeler with a serrated blade gives you a tremendous "bite", where the blade hardly ever slides off surfaces, even those difficult to cut like apples or tomatoes. Of course esthetically, you have wavy edges instead of smooth.
Zyliss makes a great straight handled peeler with a double serrated blade and a thick rounded handle (Zyliss Soft Skin Peeler) that does a really great job. I wanted a Y shaped peeler, with a serrated blade, but since Zyliss doesn't seem to have one, I decided to try Kuhn Rikon's Piranha Y. Interestingly, both Kuhn Rikon and Zyliss are both Swiss companies.
The handle of the Piranha is made of hard sturdy plastic, and is thinner and lighter than the Zyliss. The Piranha's blade is made of stainless steel, and is serrated only on one edge. The other side is not sharpened. As expected, the serrated blade does a good job and has a solid bite, although the peeler can basically only be used cutting in one direction. A double serrated blade, like the Zyliss, might have made more sense.
It goes without saying that anything with a blade or sharp edge should be treated with respect. This goes double for a serrated blade which can easily do heavy duty damage, and leave a jagged wound, that could be more prone to unsightly scarring.
The design of the blade is a slight question mark, but the Ninja is still a pretty solid product. The cost is a little high, but competitive. If you can take advantage of Amazon's 4 for 3 offer, you can get a better deal.
