Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups XP2070 Programmable 10-Cup Coffeemaker/15-Bar Pump Espresso MachineCustomer Review: I'd expect a lot more quality and customer service for the price Summary: 1 Stars
Like others, I have found the directions unnecessarily complicated and difficult to follow. That said, I was able to finally figure out the product, though it does require great patience in mastering. But more frustratingly, I have found the printed instructions to be contrary to the verbal guidance of customer service as I've had to send this until in two times after it completely stopped working. This modified approach to using the unit was only learned after having to send the unit in on two different occassions for repair. In summary, I am a huge detractor of this product and will never recommend it to a friend or anyone else. You are now well advised. However, if you would like to learn a bit more about how I have reached this consideration, please feel free to continue reading.
Total cost of ownership and other things to consider:
1. You cannot make espresso and coffee at the same time (I had a <$100.00 unit that did this perfectly fine prior to this one)
2. Clean and descale weekly, otherwise you will have problems with the unit keeping it from operating
3. Making espresso requires running it once with no grounds in it to "warm up" the grounds holder -- otherwise you will get a luke warm cup of espresso. Net time to make a double-shot cappuccino is ~15 minutes.
4. You will also be buying another inexpensive coffee machine to use while you have this one in for repairs
Under-powered unit
My gut tells me the root cause of the challenges with this unit is the circuitry in the unit is under-powered. As a result, it effectively "over heats" and goes into a self-protect mode which to us mere consumers looks and behaves as though the unit just died. I must admit, on multiple occassions, our unit appeared to have "died" only to begin working again days later. I can now "force" this to happen (note: not doing anything the instructions would advise against doing). Thus my opinion that the circuitry is under-powered and over heats. After a cooling down time, the unit works again. I could be wrong, but this is my observation.
Krups customer service
Krups customer service (which I am 90% certain is subbed out to a third party) is terrible and could benefit from some Net Promoter Score education and influence. On one occassion, my unit was returned to me (after two weeks) with no paperwork or explanation of what Krups did, discovered or recommended for future successful operation. Note that the unit was sent to them unable to even power on and this was the second time in a six week period it had been in for service (the first time was a local facility which replaced some electronics in the device).
While the unit did turn on upon return, it again failed within three days. A call back to a customer service manager did not improve our experience as it was stated the unit "was fine" when they sent it back to me.
Krups customer service had the opportunity to make things right and send me a new unit, which they refused. Instead, they informed me I would need to send the unit back to them again -- at my expense -- for them to review one more time. I asked them what they would be doing differently this time than their last review of the machine and what documentation they would send back to me indicating what was done with the unit while in their possession. The customer service representative indicated "nothing would be documented and returned to me -- only the unit." Ridiculous. I've already paid >$300.00 for the unit, spent weeks dealing with customer service, taking/shipping the unit to two facilities for repair, not to mention my investment in another coffee machine while this one was gone. Ugh. I am done investing in this unit as my total cost of ownership is way too high if I consider trips to service centers, etc.
My experience with Krups customer service, coupled with the illogical instruction manual, will keep me from buying another Krups product again. That's too bad, because the quality of the espresso and coffee output by the machine is great... when it works.
